In Response To: What's the
cheapest watch you've bought that you like -
and (if you don't mind saying) how
much was it? (v_roomy)
I've got to mention the Seiko 7009-8279, which I acquired at a local fleamarket for $5. No tax at a fleamarket, natch, so I fished a fin from my pocket and it was on me wrist quicker'n you can say 'Bob's your uncle'. And it's proven to be a stalwart watch, too, despite the low price and it's less-than-mint condition. Runs like a champ, actually!
But this watch was even less expensive, despite the fact that it was purchased brand-new;
LTD 048 Quartz I paid a mere $4.64 for it at Wal-Mart ($4.95 including tax).
And, yes, I'm quite fond of it. The case is a good size for me (40mm X 40mm) and I like the ultra-short & under-cut lugs. Very thin, too, at 7.5mm. The brushed finish is pleasing to my eye, as are the slightly unusual bezel markings (5 sec intervals to 30, then 1 sec intervals to 60). And I like the simple, uncluttered dial. Indeed, I find it to be one of the most legible watches I own.. at least in the daytime, for there's no lume whatsoever. And, of course, being a quartz it's accurate & hassle-free, despite it's Homeless Man's Watch price.
So, there you go, My Cheapest Watch!

Yet another penny-pinching strap mod. >

Date: Saturday, 13 May 2006, at 2:15 p.m.This one came OEM with a SS flexi bracelet, which is how I've been wearing it. But I'm not a fan of stretch bracelets and, worse, this one was too tight. I couldn't wear it for more than a couple of hours at a time, and lately have not been wearing it much at all. Obviously I needed a new strap.
But this is a $5 watch, so I couldn't bring myself to actually spend any cash on an upgrade. Yet nothing in my Spare Straps Box seemed suitable. What to do, what to do?
Then I remembered that I had an over-n-under velcro stap which, while way too short for me (naturally ), just might work if modded. After a couple of quick measurements, I decided to go for it. 15 minutes with scissors and needle & thread, and voilá!
Eliminating the overlap on the top strap, and sectioning the base strap into two pieces (..is that clear? Man, I should've taken a 'before' pic.. ) resulted in it being way too long on my first test fit. I could've almost strapped it on me ankle! But after removing an additional 35mm from the base strap, it was right in the ballpark.
The jury's still out on the looks.. this strap changes the watch so much that it looks strange to me.
LTD 048 Quartz
But one thing's for sure - it's all-day comfortable now! Since that was the main goal, I'm happy with the results. And, of course, I didn't spend a penny.. -Ricky
