No big surprise 'cause sure you've seen the "Incoming" post. I bought the watch from TimeZone123, an Amazon.com affiliate, and they shipped the watch PDQ considering that I ordered it just before a long Holiday Weekend. Their service overall was acceptable, if not exceptional. A couple of things kept them from earning Top Marks.. for one, the USPS 1st-Class shipping didn't include Delivery Confirmation, and was thus not trackable. It's not uncommon for free shipping deals to include Delivery Confirmation, so when I'm paying for the shipping I definitely expect it to be trackable. Then too they shipped in a padded envelope vs. a box. No deal-breaker, as the leather-clad clamshell OEM Croton box is plenty sturdy. But, again, when paying for shipping I expect the best. Also, it's worthy of note that the watch is priced $10 lower if you order through Amazon.com vs. the TimeZone123 webfront.

OK, on to the watch itself. I'll say upfront that I had high expectations for this watch.. I don't know when I've anticipated a watches arrival more eagerly! Long story short, I was not disappointed! WIS Honeymoon

The fit and finish is superlative, and wouldn't be out of place on a $500 watch. Which shouldn't be a surprise, I suppose, as lists the Suggested MSRP as $500. Smile

The 12-pip on the bezel lines up perfectly. The seconds hand on the li'l watch hits the markers spang-on. The bezel action is smooth and, while the purchase it offers the fingers could be better, it's still perfectly acceptable. None of these things can be taken for granted even on a watch costing several times the price!

Looks Good On Paper, even:

Indeed, the only surprises were pleasant ones. Cool First, the bracelet actually fits. WooHOO! The specs say it fits an 8-inch (20.3 Cm) wrist max, but it's really more like 8-5/16" (21.1 Cm). While it is a wee teensy bit tighter than I consider optimal, it's perfectly wearable as is. I've ordered 2 extra links directly from Croton, on principle, but as the individual links are 10mm in length, installing even one will result in a too-floppy fit. Luckily the clasp includes 3 micro-adjust holes spaced at 2.5mm intervals, so achieving a spot-on perfect fit should be possible.

And, as it turns out..

..my fears that the ancillary watch would result in a bracelet with less than stellar ergonomics were completely unwarranted. While I suspect that it would be a problem for those with a wrist under 7-1/4" (18.4 Cm) or so, on my ankle-sized wrist it feels perfectly natural. Thumbs up!

Another pleasant surprise was..

..the machined deployant. This was not made clear in the specs, nor was it evident in the Stock Photos. So I was expecting a stamped piece. Nice smooth action, too!

Solid endlinks as well. Note that while the main watch uses a screwdown back, the Dual-Time Module aka 'bracelet watch' is a snap-in back. It's telling that the WR of the main watch is specifically stated to be 20 ATM, but the back of the bracelet watch merely says "WATER RESISTANT", with no value stated. While I have no doubt that the main watch deserves the 20 ATM rating, the bracelet watch is another story. Frankly, I would be amazed if it's good for more than 3 ATM.

The lume's a mixed bag. While it pops OK, and is..

..quite long-lasting, it's also a bit "splotchy" in appearance, at least on the cardinal chapter markers. Mind you "the camera is merciless" comes into play here, and to the naked eye it actually looks alright. Another surprise..

..was that the li'l guy has some lume as well.

It's kinda hard to get a good angle on both watches simultaneously. Oops! So..

..you get two Hairy Wrist Shot inside! wrist shots. Laughing Wears Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr8! it does!

Now normally we'd be done here. But I do want to stress one thing. The concept of the "bracelet watch" was not well-received in my Incoming Post. Which is fine, and to be expected. It is a fairly Out There design feature, and bound not to be everyone's cuppa. However, even after I pointed out that the watch actually uses conventional lugs, so you're not locked into using it, it seems like no one could get past that one unconventional detail.

Hopefully this will drive home the point..

Works just fine and dandy wi' the NATO! WIS Honeymoon

So I maintain that the the Dual-Time Bracelet should be viewed as a no-cost Extra. Given the high quality and Miyota automatic powerplant the watch is a darned good deal even if you ditch the bracelet and go with a strap! Heck, Croton might even be willing to sell the 12H endlink separately, in which case you could easily eliminate the 2nd watch, yet still have a top-notch quality OEM bracelet.

Food for thought! Smile

I know I should leave it there. Like as not I'll get nothing but grief Eek! if I show you this next combo. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

Still, in the interests of Full Disclosure I feel I'd be remiss if I didn't point out..

..that the dual-time module can easily be adapted for use with a conventional strap. Wink

Indeed, this has one very attractive side-benefit for me in that the bracelet watch "extends" a regular ol' Long strap to an XXL. WooHOO! Cool Where have you been all my life, li'l watch! WIS Honeymoon

Thanks for your time, Dear Constant Reader.

Sláinte! Cheers!

Nice review! You covered alot. I must say it looks like a solid piece. (n/t)

Nice review - great info & pics Thumbs up!
Have to agree with yourself that, for some, the bracelet version is just too far out there Crazy! Loco!

However, as a collector of many pieces which are not widely regarded has having any sort of value past personal sympathy (Bill Blass watches comes to mind) I can certainly grokk where you're going as this one has great details, is solidly built and looks the business in most every way.

The only snag for me is well, its a Croton(tm), which in my mind savagely wrestles with Invicta to round out the now missing and sorely absent Lords of K-Mart level standard. Who will win? Yes, K-Mart carried $200+ watches, stereos and TV's. In much the same light as the name DeBafre (a linguistic nightmare in the western hemisphere, I concede) the name Croton just grounds my kite with a jolt of evil lightning.

My preference is, if at all, then for the love of humanity - on the strap.

Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

Again, nice review.

Enjoy! I know you will.

Those crispy baked thingies are quite popular in the USA, too. Wink

Croton's earliest roots apparently lie in Italy, not Switzerland as you might expect. I say "apparently" because hard info on the original pre-Nationwide Time company is mighty scarce. Some sources specifically say that they are named for and started in Crotone, Italy. Others say that they "began in a small workshop on the Swiss-Italian border". Thing is, Crotone is about as far from the Swiss border as you can get, and still be on the mainland. I am confused

Also, Croton was involved with Nivada and Nivada-Grenchen at some point. Watches bearing both all three names in various combinations exist.

Wish I knew more, but it's a bit of a puzzle...

Ahhh.. well, can't argue there.

While I could point out that has a long and legitimate history going back well over a century..

..and that they were once a serious competitor for well-respected mid-line Swiss brands such as Certina, Mido, Rado, or Tissot, that would be disingenuous. The truth is that since the acquisition of the marque by Nationwide Time in 1991 they are pretty much a "ShopNBC Brand" not much different than a Stauer, Steinhausen, Stührling Original or, yes, Invicta themselves.

You know, it's funny, but the name itself doesn't bother me in the same way that does. Not in the least.

Now, their status as a hyped-up ShopNBC Brand, that's another thing. I'm willing to overlook it because..

Interesting. So far you're the only one who's shown a preference for the leather strap. Smile

It does work well, IMHO. Far better than I expected it to!

Nice write-up, as usual, Ricky.
I almost fainted when you said it s a snap-in case back. I saw on the back that it has the Rolex-style serrations AND the universal style ones. I can't believe they went to all that trouble on a snap-in back!

How're the crown threads?

Nice looking watch. I'm a sucker for blue.

"Snap-in case back" applies only to the Dual-Time Module, the 'bracelet watch'.

The main watch does indeed use a screwdown caseback.

A-OK. It has both a good "feel" and plenty of thread engagement.

To be clear, I have no doubt that the main watch deserves it's 20 ATM WR Rating.

The Dual-Time Module, the 'bracelet watch', that's another story...

Great review, Bro Ricky, and congrats on the purchase. There is no way I would be able to wear that watch on my size nothing wrist, but I am sure it is smashing on yours! Enjoy it immensely. Clapping!

Re: There is no way I would be able to wear that watch on my size nothing wrist..
Well.. with the Dual-Time Module in place, it is a behemoth, and no two ways about it.

But fit a conventional strap, and not so much.

Thanks heaps mate. Smile And if you look at..
..the "74mm across the lugs including the Dual-Time Module", it might even be big enough to win a spot in your watch box. Wink

It does 'wear' pretty big with The Module in place...

I'd have to try one on but I think the 43mm case would be a deal-breaker...send yours over so I can see! Laughing (n/t)

But, honestly, it does feel fine on leather, and that's how I'm wearin' it as I type this.

Mind you it's unlikely to last long.

Mind you if we overlook my US $50 in Amazon.com Rewards this is nearly a US $100 watch. Eek!

Not exactly inexpensive by my humble standards. Wink

But yes, well worth it IMHO!
Thumbs up!

We are so on 1 line here! Laughing

I paid almost a € 100 for the 2nd hand Constantin Weisz, but looking around on the net and looking at the pictures, it felt like it's the money worth and probably even more than that. A new one in silver in Germany would set me back € 208,50. and they don't even sell the gold version. I also saw people doing WTB's and WTT (for very nice invicta's) for this watch, so I have high expectations...

Ricky Lee 12 June 02, 2012 07:31PM

Re: I reckon ye Done Good!
Some are talking it down as being just another boutique watch, but considering the very sought after mesh band of 24(!) mm., (I have seen the watch sold in Germany 2nd hand for € 120,00 with a simple leather strap!) But also the watch is heavy, big, has a 30 jewels Sea-Gul in it, I can't imagine it would be a piece of cr*p. Of course it's a fake name, but it IS a German firm (who are sending me extra links for the end piece of the bracelet), they have the watch just made in China to keep the price down, something what happens a lot in the Western World lately, as I told ensign...

Pay no attention to the nay-sayers. In some circles there seems to be a special dislike of companies with German-Chinese "dual citizenship". This is usually evidenced by the use of the term GermAsian to describe the firms and their products.

in particular has many detractors, to the point where they've been Black Listed on several watch forums. Yet I've been quite impressed with every Trias I've handled, and my own..

I see no reason to doubt that your incoming CW will be just as satisfactory.
Ricky Lee 19 June 03, 2012 06:35AM

Re: to the point where they've been Black Listed on several watch forums
Yep, CW is also on that list, but they make an assumption, without having the items in hand and scrutinized. Those who have bought one of them before, have bought more and this particular one seems to become a kind of well sought after item, as I go trough the internet. And even the quick response of the German owner (Cheyron GmbH, Cologne, Germany) to send some links, was very positive in my eyes. It's a pity, the original pouch of the watch is not available any more, as I heard it could well be used as travel pouch for a couple of watches but hey, I got it for a good price (if customs don't make any fuzz), though pretty to the top of my 2nd hand watch budget!
