While I blame this one on Bro. benhemp, who gave us a heads-up on the COTD Deal last week, partial blame has to go to Bro. MCV. Smile Sure his excellent review kindled the fire in the first place. Laughing

Anyway. I've had my eye on these for many moons, but have never been able to convince me Inner Scotsman to break open the wallet. Part of the reason is that they come in so many color variations - All of which I like - that I'd go cross-eyed every time I tried to choose a specific model.

Not all those are Tuskegee Fliers, of course. Stuhrling gets some mileage out of the Tuskegee moniker, and there's also the "Tuskegee Airman", "Tuskegee Bomber", and "Tuskegee Thunderbolt". That last one's a "Tuskegee Skymaster", different enough that it should probably be considered a whole line unto itself. These different models can typically be had in most of the color combinations shown, so add up all the permutations and you're lookin' at two-dozen+ choices! Oops!

Then too.. well, rather than Reinvent The Wheel, I'll just quote meself, from nearly two years ago:

Well. You'll find some difference of opinion when it comes to , the company. Smile Some guys love 'em. But, personally, I'm not a fan.

A few reasons for this. First, they are basically a start-up that appropriated the name and history of a defunct old-school Swiss brand, and they make way too much to-do about this "pedigree". Frankly, it crosses the line into hype Frowning, and I don't have much tolerance for hype.

And when you encounter them in a brick & mortar setting (more often than you might think), they are typically over-priced and presented as being way more "up-scale" than they really are. Again, bordering on hype. Thumbs down

However, having said all that, the watches themselves are quite decent. Despite my ambivalence for the brand itself, they make several models that tempt me greatly. For instance, I find several iterations of the Tuskegee Flier to be extremely attractive. If not for my aforementioned ambivalence about , the company, I'd probably have bought one long since. Wink
So, while I'm still no fan of the Stührling Original Marketing Paradigm, obviously it's not a deal-breaker. Laughing

But let's have a Real Photo!

The Tuskegee Flier, COTD Edition. WooHOO! Smile

One reason these have long appealed to me is the Aviation Theme. I'm a sucker for a flieger with a story, and these ostensibly pay homage to..

..the men of the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group, the legendary Tuskegee Airmen of WW2.

This is my first , and the first surprise was..

..the packaging and presentation. Very impressive! Those are "borrowed photos", but mine came in identical packaging.

The watch is 44.5mm X 52mm X 13mm thick, with 22mm lugs. Case is all SS, with screwdown caseback, push-pull crown, and display back. The back glass is presumably plain ol' mineral glass, but the main crystal is Stuhrling's proprietary "Krysterna". I have no clue what this is, but some speculate that it's sapphire or sapphire-coated mineral glass. Personally, I think this unlikely. My guess is that it's simply a form of tempered mineral glass, a la Seiko Hardlex™.

Nice profile, and the signed crown's a welcome touch. The strap features a signed buckle, very well made, and indeed I was quite pleased at the quality of the strap overall. It's almost long enough, even! I was able to achieve a semi-comfortable fit by installing a deployant but, given that Leather Season is over here in Mississippi, I reckon I'll soon be swapping on a NATO. Whistle Smile

The movement is a Dixmont-Ghangzou DG2816, a 22-jewel auto which hacks and handwinds. It beats at 21,600 A/h, is 11-½ ligne in diameter (26mm), 5.87 mm thick, and uses 1.50/1.00/.17 hands. Now obviously it is..

..decorated more finely than the base model DG2816, thus becoming a Stührling Caliber ST-91006. Mine's running +14 seconds after the first 24 hours. Not exactly Chronometer Grade Performance, but not half bad for an inexpensive Chinese auto.
Cool

The lume was a pleasant surprise! Not so much that it's World-Class glow-like-torch in intensity, but the fact that there's any at all. Bro. Marc's review states that his model had no lume whatsoever, so I was expecting the same here! Apparently "no-lume" applies only to certain color combinations..? In any case, the lume here is really quite decent by Budget Watch standards. No, it won't last all night. But it pops pretty good, and does remain legible for several hours.

So. In case you can't tell, I'm pretty darned impressed with this watch! Indeed, given the high level of fit & finish and the intricate packaging, I am amazed that this watch can be sold at a point that will leave enough change from your US $50 bill for a modest lunch. It may well be THE new Bang For The Buck Champion in me modest collection.

Even at the more usual ~ $100 to $120 street prices, I recommend it highly! Thumbs up!

Sláinte! Cheers!

-Ricky

Niceee Ricky. You know, this may be the only Stuhrling
I would be interested in buying... not immediately because I have other priorities, but it seems to be nice enough to own...

Mind you this could be due in part to the overwhelming persuasiveness of Bro. MCV's reviews. Whistle

But there are at least a handful of watches besides the Tuskegee Flier that I'd consider...

Wink Cheers!

I certainly like the one with the 'golf ball' design dial Cool (n/t)

Been eyeing the Tuskegee for some time now...
...may just have to get me one now! Thanks for the review, Ricky Lee!

I think it's a very pretty watch. Too bad it doesn't say on the watch that it is dedicated to the Tuskegee...
In that case I would have been all over it...

I got to agree. For one thing... Png Attachments
..the CNC-generated approximation of hand-engraving on this movement does not impress me. Thumbs down

It might impress a civilian. But a WIS? Come on! Whistle

I'd much rather they installed a plain-jane undecorated DG2816, and substituted a nice solid caseback engraved with..

Re: I think it's a very pretty watch. Too bad it doesn't say on the watch that it is dedicated to the Tuskegee...
Agreed wholeheartedly. Those kids from Tuskegee were brave in so many ways that no one else had to be simply by virtue of the colour of their skin. Yet they proved themselves time and again to be consummate professionals and damned hot pilots with some of the best records of the war, including fewest losses of bombers they escorted. True heroes as far as I am concerned.

James T. Kirk© 18 May 21, 2012 05:26AM

Thanks for the blame! And great review, Ricky! But mine is for sale . . .
I am glad to have pointed some folks to this deal, which I think was a real winner. It's nice seeing that some of you decided to get it.

My watch arrived two days ago, and I agree with Ricky that the watch is beautiful and the packaging is too. He did a great job of reviewing it. Thanks, Ricky! I couldn't have done it better.

I really like mine, except for the blue color used on the dial. I thought that it would "pop" more from the black background, but I find it somewhat subdued. Speaking with BobbyMike today at a church covered-dish gathering, he explained to me that that is the "aged watch" look.

I find myself wishing that they had put Ricky's #4 (white face, black markings, my new first choice) or #2 (black face, yellow markings) above on sale. But I might have still chosen the blue, since I hadn't seen it yet. Either of those other models are still on my watch (pun!) list.

Anyway, I've decided that I will sell mine for what I paid ($42.54) plus actual shipping, shipped in the original inner and outer boxes. The watch has only been briefly on my wrist (less than 5 minutes) one time, so it is like new. Contact me if any of you are interested. Otherwise, I'll post on the sales forum.

Well.. I'm a bit surprised. But only in that the stock photos are quite representative of the actual watch. IMHO. If anything they seem, to me, to make the colors look more "subdued" than they actually are...

Ahhh.. not sure I agree that's the effect they were going for. If so, they certainly kept it subtle.

This is an extreme example of "the 'aged watch' look":

I'd say the former would be a much better choice. I've seen the yellow-on-black in person, and it's also rather under-stated and subdued.

Maybe the blue-on-orange would be your best bet. That sucker would really "pop", I imagine. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

Cool

If that doesn't pan out, remember that has a generous 30-day Return Policy. Aside from Books, Software, and Videos, it's pretty much wide-open and no-questions-asked.

Good luck!

Cheers!
Ricky Lee 24 May 21, 2012 06:17AM

I agree that the photos were accurate. I guess I was hoping!
And thanks for the guidance about the yellow-on-black version. It is appreciated.

I think the blue-on-orange version has too much pop for me!

I think the one that Wen mentioned (black dial, white markers, brown strap; very traditional) would now be my 1st choice, and the black-on-white one my 2nd.

Both handsome watches, sure. Thumbs up!
Ricky Lee 20 May 21, 2012 01:22PM

Oh my word, an aged look on PURPOSE?? Crazy! Loco!
I can imagine, some people (certainly not me) like a very old battered watch with heavy patina and mold on/in the dial because of it's real age, but to make that on purpose?? That's even worse than putting decorative chrono dials on a cheap Chinese watch, I just can't stand that (just like plastic-and botox enhanced Hollywood people). Of course IMHO. Wink

I'm no fan of the concept, I admit.

It smacks too much of Fake aleart, to me.

I don't suppose they make a "midsize" version?....

'cuz I sure can't swing 44 mm

Smaug 21 May 20, 2012 10:37PM

Re: I don't suppose they make a "midsize" version?.... 'cuz I sure can't swing 44 mm
And, as noted below, it "wears bigger" than 44mm might seem to indicate. IMHO.

Alas, if they make a smaller version I'm not aware of it. AFAIK they start at 44mm and go up from there...

Ricky Lee 19 May 21, 2012 06:01AM

Nice review, Ricky! Thumbs Up It's a great value these days. smile Jpeg Attachments
I like the basic black dial / brown strap best. I even ordered it once, but I got the XL version (48mm vs 44mm) and I had to return it.

If I see this one (non-XL version) at below $50 as well, I'll definitely go for it!

Wen 27 May 20, 2012 08:36PM

Re: I like the basic black dial / brown strap best.
Doh! Oops! Can't believe I forgot to post a photo of that one. Crazy! Loco!

Agreed it's the most traditional (or "basic") of all the choices.

You know, for some reason I can't quite put a finger on, even the 44mm version seems to "wear big". At first I though I must have gotten the XL version, too, and had to put the calipers on it to convince meself otherwise.

Not that I'm complaining! 'tis no problem for me personally, but I know that some struggle even at 42mm, so it bears pointing out.

Re: Watch or Accessory Review Stührling Original Tuskegee Flier
Thanks for the review, Bro Ricky. I think the next time these roll around on sale, I just may pull the trigger on it. I have to say, like you, regardless of the company's reputation, I am impressed with the quality of the watch for their prices. I have their "Delphi Omega" skeleton watch. I know you are no fan of skeleton styles, but the mechanics of the watch are excellent. It really keeps great time. When I am not wearing it, I will wind it every 30 hours and it is pretty in line with my Seiko quartz. When I am wearing it, I don't wind it at all, and it still is accurate enough for me. Same movement as in the flier, so it is clearly a successful one for Sturhling. It keeps better time than my Android which has a Seagull movement in it.

Cheers!

Well.. again, still has them for $52.94 shipped. I know every little bit counts, but that's a Darned Good Price, too!

The orange-on-black and yellow-on-black models can currently be had for ~ $85 from several sources...
