Especially for you, Jeff, since I know that with your new-found appreciation of wabi sabi you will really enjoy this'n. Wink, wink ... And the apology, Bro. Fox, is 'cause I reported in the Timex Data Link Is Happy Day! post that the Armitron Triple-Date, was "dead as a doornail". Well, as it turns out, 'twas I who was dead wrong! Oops! My goof! It lives! Wink, wink ... Thumbs Up!

How could I make such a bone-headed mistake, you ask? Well! I'll tell ye! In a misguided attempt to save a few pence, I bought a job lot of Chinese-made batteries a month or two back. These are T&E brand, manufactured by the Hitaka Electron Co., LTD. I've used.. ahhh, six so far, and they've been OK. But the seventh, the one I installed into the Armitron, was itself dead as a doornail, right out of the blister-pack. Scary! I am angry!! Never occurred to me to doubt a "fresh" factory-new battery, so I put it back in the pack and wrote the Armitron off. Fast forward to yesterday afternoon, and a friend stops by with a dead quartz watch. I pull the same battery back out and.. nothing. WTH?! I know this watch should work, so I try a fresh Energizer cell and, sure enough, she takes right off! Thumbs Up! The moral of the story - do NOT buy cheap batteries! Mind you, these T&E cells can be had for 18-cents per, vs. 48-cents for an Energizer. But if you can't trust the SOB, is it a valid savings? Not to me!

Now, I hate to admit it, but even after all that, it took nearly another 24 hours for the penny to drop, and I realize "Doh! That Armitron may be a runner after all!" Well, I pulled it back out of the Salvage Yard, popped in another battery and Bingo! Away we go! Thumbs Up! And, yeah, I did use another T&E cell. Hey, I gotta use these things up to get rid of 'em, right? Laughing!

But enough about batteries. Here ya go, Jeff! A true Triumph Of Wabi Sabi! Wink, wink ...
that the 3rd watch you retired to RLHfWW, the

I do stand behind my statement that she's a whacking big one, though, at 45mm X 52mm. Pretty darned hefty, too! This is some good base metal here, Bubba! Wink, wink ... But look beyond the wabi and the obvious built-to-a-price nature of Armitron, and this is actually quite a solid and fetching watch. It sports a screw-down caseback (unusual for the marque!), screw-down crowns (the crown at 4 controls the date functions), and didn't ship a drop of water during the requisite scrubbing with Barkeepers Friend and Brasso. Yeah, I checked. Wink, wink ...

And I gotta say, the styling..

..is most pleasing to my eye. Thumbs Up! The case and bezel shape work for me, and work well together. And I loooove those blue auxiliary hands! Thumbs Up! Shoot, the main hands are quite nice, too.

Another aspect I like is the fact that it uses a rather unusual movement, an Akita 9ME00. This is the first one I've ever seen, and it looks to be well-constructed. All functions operate smoothly, with a nice positive feel. And, while it's not a big deal to me, some of you may be surprised to hear that the seconds hand hits all the markers spang-on. Heck, even the lume..

Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..is still pretty decent! I'll drink to that.

So, yeah, it's been rode hard and put up wet. Yes, the main crown only has 1/2 turn of thread engagement. Sure, the bezel is still locked up tighter'n ol' Dick's Hatband. (And I mean totally immovable, despite being treated to a penetrating oil enema! I am confused...! I might have been able to break it loose with a pipe wrench Scary! but, hey, I don't even use rotating bezels much, sooo... Laughing!) And, no, I can't in good conscience trot out the ol' cliche..

.."But it looks better on the wrist." Wink, wink ... It still looks like it's "been dug up out of the ground", I know. Laughing! But you know what? I still like it! WIS honeymoon

Some watches just look better with a little wear and tear, some combat scars, so to speak. And thank you for a new cliche: "It looks better on the wrist", which I think is a variation of "Please forgive my crappy pics!" Lauging out loud! I will be adding that to the (not quite) Complete List of Watch Forum Cliches forthwith! I am smiling ...

I'm honored! Boy, am I embarrassed!

FWIW, to me it seems more like a variation, or perhaps the flipside of "The camera shows no mercy" or "The camera shows all flaws".

And it's true, to a large degree. I mean, I'm wearin' the watch right now, the room lighting is quite soft and dim, and it looks A-OK. I am smiling...

The new crystal from me good pal Otto set me back a whopping $2.50 Scary! and the battery $0.48, so I make it Post about an American watch of movement $2.98. What a nice round number! Surely a' foine Boy, am I embarrassed!

No crowns ye'll note as, in the words of obsidian this morn, "Houston, we have a problem." {insert orbital squelching noise}

Uh huh. Bead blasting threads, as I did here, is tricky. It demands some minimal masking, and then prudence with the beadblast wand. I am smiling... So I am angry!! the main crown threads won't engage. I am sad...

But, as I'd taken the foine advice of another brother, Dave Murphy, I'd had a wee ladies pint o' ale to steady me nerve afore I assembled the watch. Wink, wink ... So you'll understand that, in me Right-thinking Scots Anger, I quaffed another and called it a night. "Prudence is the greater part of valor".

And don't try to cut with the tool. Just massage the thread flanks with the relieved portion of the tool, just below center. My guess is that you may just burnish those threads back to where they belong.

Of course, if it doesn't work, use the threader to cut.

But I have Taken Steps to avoid Green Wrist. I wiped the watch down with a no-buff wax spray, and will do so after every wearing. After all, every watch should be wiped down after each and every use, right P12? Wink, wink ...

We'll see..

Ahhhh.. good theory, but 'tis not a matter of peened threads. I examined the crown tube under a 50X scope, and the threads are A-ok. Problem is, the threads in the Parental Guidance Suggested pot-metal crown were already partially stripped out (a mere ~ 1/3 turn engagement), and with a Caveman like meself operatin' them, they finally just gave up the ghost. I am crying! The solution is obvious, if not necessarily easy - source a new (or good used) crown. I am smiling...

Right. That works! Thumbs Up!

Mind you, for very fine threads I sometimes chase 'em with me Starret scribe - hardened tool steel which I keep honed to a needle point.

But what do you think of the case finish? I'm kinda disappointed that no one has commented on it. I mean, 'tis the first bead-blasted base metal case I can recall seeing. Quite unusual, it its own twisted way. Wink, wink ... I rather like the subtle almost-too-light-to-really-be-called Gold hue.

Just as long as I can keep me wrist from turning green.. Scary! Wink, wink ... Laughing out loud! Laughing!

Seriously, sounds intriguing! Got any photos of what kind of finish ye model railroaders get?

And more to the point, how durable do you think it is?

On caveat.. remember I've already applied wax to this thing. I reckon that might cause the Blacken-it some problems. Oops! My goof! I could strip it with alcohol or acetone, I guess. But, also, I want to do a jackleg 'durability test' on the waxed finish, for at least a week or two. If my wrist don't turn green afore then Scary! I might have somethin.. Laughing!

I've seen a color range from >> (Views: 8)
Dave Murphy -- May 21, 2009 06:14PM
>>oily black to very dark grey.

As far as durability, I have no idea. But the finish reminds me of black oxide on steel.

I'm not surprised at the variation in hue.. (Views: 8)
Ricky Lee -- May 21, 2009 06:35PM
..and I'm betting that since "base metal" can vary soooo much in its specific makeup, it'd be a crapshoot on what color any given watch case would end up.

Still worth checking into! Thumbs Up!

Thanks Dave!
