Ahhhh.. good theory, but 'tis not a matter of peened threads. I examined the crown tube under a 50X scope, and the threads are A-ok. Problem is, the threads in the pot-metal crown were already partially stripped out (a mere ~ 1/3 turn engagement), and with a Caveman like meself operatin' them, they finally just gave up the ghost. The solution is obvious, if not necessarily easy - source a new (or good used) crown.Quote

>>an expert machinist such as yourself can un-peen those threads, no? I would try an internal carbide threading tool, held by hand, so you can get up to the shoulder.
Right. That works!Quote

And don't try to cut with the tool. Just massage the thread flanks with the relieved portion of the tool, just below center. My guess is that you may just burnish those threads back to where they belong.
Of course, if it doesn't work, use the threader to cut.
Seriously, sounds intriguing! Got any photos of what kind of finish ye model railroaders get?Quote

>> Since you are down to base metal, which seems to be copper based, how about going down to the hobby shop and picking up a bottle of "Blacken-it"?
It's a product that model railroaders use to blacken brass.
