Watch review: Trintec ZULU-03 Altimeter Automatic model 9060VW

In the interests of full disclosure, I feel obliged to make one thing clear up front. I count Brendon Nunes, Trintec's owner, as a friend. Trintec is also a paid sponsor of . So obviously the usual "no affiliation" disclaimer does not apply here. However, I'll also point out that I was a fan of Trintec products long before becoming affiliated. And it goes without saying that I will do my utmost to keep this review honest and objective.

OK! With that being said, let's have a photo of the watch in question. Here's a throwaway iPhone photo taken on 12 December 2012, the day after I received the watch:

One other thing we need to get out of the way. When I talk about Trintec Watches being The Originator of the Cockpit Instrument Style Watch, I am perfectly serious. Despite the fact that Impostors! usually gets (and takes!) credit for the design, they were most definitely not the first to produce and market this style of wristwatch. I first put forth this notion on the PMWF, in February of 2006, and no one seemed to take it seriously. No surprise, as it was mostly conjecture - I had no hard documentation at that point. But now I do.

Yes, the instrument pictured in the patent is a clock. However, by 1990 Trintec had applied the design to a wristwatch, which wore the logo:

This watch was used as an internal incentive/award item by RYDER-Aviall, but was also available to the public, though apparently on a somewhat limited basis.

By 1993 the Altimeter was available bearing the Trintec logo...

..along with two additional models, the 9062W Directional Gyro and the 9063W Artificial Horizon. These models mark the entry by Trintec to the market at large, and quickly became cult favorites amongst aviation insiders and enthusiasts.

So whether you choose to see the Br01 as a Trintec homage or no, one thing can not be denied: Trintec was there first, and is The Original Cockpit Instrument Watch.

OK! Enough history, let's have some photos of my 9060VW!

I must apologize for the odd raindrop you'll see here and there. I re-shot these photos a couple of days later, on a sunny day but, ironically, they didn't turn out half as well as these. Hard to beat the diffuse light of a cloudy, yet reasonably bright day!

The case is full SS, 42mm X 52mm X 13mm thick, with 22mm lugs. The screwdown crown is finely knurled, with a very smooth & positive action and 2+ turns of thread engagement. Well done indeed! The black PVD coating is evenly and uniformly applied and, judging by past experience with Trintecs, is of DLC-class hardness. Both my ZULU-01 and IDENT NAV-01 have proven to be highly resistant to scratches.

The crystal is uncoated flat mineral glass, and stands ~ .25mm proud of the bezel. The eight "screws" on the face are purely decorative, though the 2.0mm hex threaded lugbars are most assuredly functional. A nice touch!

The OEM resin strap fits my ~8.5-inch (21.6 Cm) wrist with one hole to spare and, unlike the similar strap on my ZULU-01 GMT, it is not a "dust magnet".

The buckle is unsigned, but nicely executed.

The matte-finished screwdown caseback sports crisp engraving and a mineral glass display window which affords an unobstructed view of the Miyota by Citizen 8215 movement.

Now, most of you will be familiar with the 8215, so I'll spare you the detail. Suffice to say that it's a Japanese-made 21-jewel 11-½ ligne auto which handwinds, but does not hack, running at 21,600 A/h. A common movement, yes, but also a robust and reliable one. My watch has averaged +18 sec/day, tracked over a 1-week period. Not chronometer grade, but well within Miyota's stated -20/+40 sec/day specification.

One nice touch on the dial is that it's a multi-level affair, with the "windows" at 3 and 6 o'clock being inset or "sunken". These are purely decorative features, yes.. but quite handsome!

I'm not the biggest fan of resin/rubber/silicone straps, though I must say that this one is a cut above average in comfort and wearability.

Still, I couldn't resist trying a NATO.

The character of the watch is well-suited to a NATO, it seems to me, and I'm very happy with the combination.

The lume is something of a mixed bag..

It "pops" very, very well initially, but doesn't have true all-night staying power. It's much better than the ZULU-01, mind, and seems to be a fairly even match with the NAV-01. The lume half-life is ~ 2-1/2 to 3 hours, and it's still readable after 5 to 6 hours - but barely. Beyond 7 hours, it will have effectively gone dark.

Another niggle, to some, may be the black-on-white date wheel. Yes, reversing the color would make it "blend in" to the black dial. But IMHO that's a 2-edged sword! With the small amount of real estate afforded by the 8215 calendar, I believe that legibility would suffer unduly with such a setup. As it is, readability of the calendar is only so-so for us who wear spectacles.

And, it must be said, the US $450 MSRP will certainly be off-putting to some. Yes, you can find watches using the Miyota 8215 for much less, from high volume manufacturers like Croton. However, the price is right in line with Miyota-powered offerings from "boutique brands" such as Boschett, Deep Blue, Helson, Ocean7, Zenton, etc. Judging by the eFlay "street" prices of the ZULU-01 and ZULU-05 models, I believe we'll see ~ 30% discounts on the ZULU-03 line. That would put them at US $315, at which point they become quite reasonable compared to the aforementioned Boutique Brands. If that still seems steep, check out the prices on a brand-new Br01. Go ahead, I'll wait. Now, consider that when you're wearin' a Trintec you have a watch with a true pedigree. From THE original manufacturer of this iconic style. Despite the price of the Bell & Ross, it can't match Trintec in that regard.

In summary, I recommend the ZULU-03 Altimeter highly. The fit & finish is top notch, the specs are good, and with the high quality components used, it promises to be rock-solid reliable.

And then there's that pedigree!

I was away when this was posted and neglected to comment - another excellent review Ricky
I particularly like the lume shot! These are really nice watches.

Very nice! I thought I'd already mentioned this, but >>>
a couple of searches reveals that I must have never actually posted it. Anyway, I hadn't realized the new one was a mechanical until you posted the review. Is this Trintec's first foray into using mechanical movements?

This is the one I'd get from that series, the cockpit clock version.
