OK, OK! Maybe "mutilated" is too strong a term. This is not a Jocke-style Total Destruction post. Smile But no doubt hard-core Fans will see my actions as controversial, if not outright sacrilege. Wink

The problem, of course, is that Swatch straps never fit me plus-sized wrist. Ever. Probably someone, somewhere offers XL Swatch straps but, if so, I'm pretty darned sure they're too dear for a Cheap Bastard like me. I am crying Damn the proprietary design of Swatch straps! I am angry! If only I could fit conventional straps. Whistle

Well, long story short, I took a close look at one of the Swatches Bro. Marc recently entrusted to us here at Ricky Lee's Home For Wayward Wristwaches and thought "Well, why couldn't I?!" Crazy! Loco!

With me, thinking is pret' near the same as doing, so I pressed out the pins, removed the strap, fired up the Dremel™, and..

..removed the offending pair of "middle lug bosses", thus enabling me to use conventional 17mm springbars to fit a 1-piece nylon MilStrap. Smile

Obviously these are 'Before' photos and ye'll have to wait a bit to see my handiwork. But it's better'n getting nailed with the Dreaded Icon! Eek!

And.. well, I suppose I should admit that's not even The that recieved yon Caveman Mod. Oops! Oh no! It's a whole other Swatch, a 3-hand day-date vs. a chrono. Still! Technically ye can't hit me with the Dread Icon! Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

I'll shoot Real Photos soon, I promise. Blushing

In the meantime, I can't tell ye how fine it feels to finally, after years of yearning, to actually be able to wear a ! WIS Honeymoon

Cheers!

Interesting points here! I am expecting one too, identical of the one I had in 80s!!!Laughing (n/t)

Wouldn't a more robust proposition be to use the Dremel to notch the replacement strap? I am confused
Which, in theory, I would think might result in less stress on the "surviving" lugs...

Nuvolari 65 May 26, 2011 12:52AM

I'm thinking that wouldn't work so hot on a NATO...
..nor with a single-throw nylon US-style Milstrap, which is what I used.

But with a conventional strap, yeah, that makes a lot more sense! Thumbs up!

Ricky Lee 70 May 26, 2011 09:13AM

Be careful with these lugs and their supports >>> Jpeg Attachments
This was a material issue on the past. Swatch has added these two support prongs because the lugs tended to break off.

I had two of these examples with broken off lugs:

I used my DREMEL to explore the inside of the watches (because of the broken lugs, I could not wear the watches anymore). On the blue you clearly see that one of the outer lug prongs had broken off

To any Swatch owner, I do not encourage (not just for these models, but for all Swatches) to make changes on the case nor lugs. These parts break relatively easily

It's sound advice, sure. So I've got to agree.. do not try this at home! Eek!

I've got a nifty little Casio in the boneyard with the same exact problem. Runs perfect, but no way to wear it since the lug is broken. Frowning

..(not just for these models, but for all Swatches)..
It's worth noting that the one I modded does use a different case than the ones you picture. It's what I think of as a "Type B" Swatch case.. instead of being 100% resin, it has a stamped metal 'bezel cap' that fits over the resin base, extending to the C/L of the lug holes. While I do realize the metal cap is intended as a decorative feature, I'm hoping that it will also serve to strengthen the lugs. I'll try to shoot some photos this evening. So far so good.. but only time will tell. Smile
Ricky Lee 76 May 26, 2011 09:10AM

Thanks Ricky, I am looking forward to seeing your pics. And if >>> Jpeg Attachments
you could come up with an inexpensive yet nice looking "contraption" for all kind of watches with broken lugs, then I think you could quit your day job.

Right now I think the only way to wear watches with broken lugs in a decent way, is this rather historic way:  (Broken photo link -rlm) Not exactly like this, I am thinking a leather band that has a pocket on top with a cut-out to read the time. Maybe some of our strapmakers pick this idea up. But actually I think it exists already. My father's Thommen Barometer had such a pocket

Reto 94 May 26, 2011 01:05PM

The dremel gets you a long way smile (n/t)

JP 63 May 25, 2011 11:00PM

That's one way to do it or you could have.... Jpeg Attachments URL
gotten another Swatch strap and attach another buckle end to the watch then add a middle piece. Sort of like this creation from Shane Delaurian. Pic taken off his site. Either way I look forward to your pics.

I can correct you, with some experience, you're not the first to do such a mod >
I desecrated a Swatch several years before my first post here in hopes of a better strap. Laughing

greg honeycutt 79 May 25, 2011 08:45PM

Never claimed this to be a first, mate. I am confused
Tongue

Indeed, as ridiculously easy as it was, I reckon plenty of Swatches have been modded thusly. Laughing

Seriously, "ridiculously easy" fits. Took me less than five minutes from "Hmmmmm" to "Done!". Smile Another few minutes to fit the strap. Well under 10 minutes all told. Laughing

"Desecrated"! That's the word I was looking for! Much more descriptive of the actual process than "mutilated"! Smile

Thank you! mate!
Ricky Lee 71 May 25, 2011 09:00PM

yep, the proper wheel on a dremel and those silly little lugs are gone in less than a beer >
glad to assist with the proper wording. Honestly, those stock Swatch straps, though decent, aren't much.

greg honeycutt 75 May 25, 2011 09:08PM

Good advice here from Greg. On older Swatches it does not even take a DREMEL to take these off, they >>>
fall off by themselves EEK!

It's a happy day, a new watch arrived Watch or Accessory Review at Ricky Lee's Home For Wayward Wristwatches

January 13, 2012 02:52PM

OK, OK! I'll come clean.. this is technically not an Is Happy Day!, I suppose, since I have shown y'all photos of this very watch back on 25 May of 2011. I am confused

However, I have never actually worn it, so perhaps I can skate by on a technicality? Innocent

But, you say, "Nearly 8 months and you've never worn it? Ricky, have you gone stark-raving looney tunes?" Laughing Ah! But I have a good alibi!

Yeah, 'tis a and, like all Swatches, the OEM strap was way too short for me ankle-sized wrist. Oops!

So, I got out the Dremel®...

..and performed my patented Tom Swift Swatch Strap Compatibility Mod©.

There is one one key difference here compared to the last mod, though...

Swatch "Blue Marble" chrono

Where I used conventional springbars in the previous mod, here I used the OEM solid Swatch bars. Yes, there's a reason. The Swatch "middle lugs" are not purely decorative, nor designed solely as a revenue-generating measure to lock one into proprietary Swatch straps. According to my sources, they are were added to address a breakage problem that was encountered on the very early pieces which used a conventional lug pair. So, where I relied on the metal cap of the day-date to add just that little bit of structural integrity to make the telescoping springbars feasible, here I didn't have that luxury. So far so good.

The sub-$2 Uncle Otto strap is a tight fit..

..but it does fit. Thumbs up!

And it wears Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr8! Cool WooHOO! WIS Honeymoon

Cheers!

"He looked down through the scratched, greenish glass that topped the counter. Watches there, each face to him a tiny and contained poem, a pocket museum, subject over time to the laws of entropy and of chance. These tiny mechanisms, their jeweled hearts beating. Wearing down, he knew, through the friction of metal on metal. He sold nothing unserviced, everything cleaned and lubricated. He took fresh stock to a sullen but highly skilled Pole in Oakland to be cleaned, oiled, and timed. And he did this, he knew, not to provide a better, more reliable product, but to ensure that each one might better survive in an essentially hostile universe. Congrats, Ricky, I've been searching the Bay for...
...the Irony type of Swatches, I own 2 but love to have a Chrono as well, but not a "plastic" one! Remember I'm just no fan of plastic watches. If I find the right color (blue/darkblue), I might sell my aluminum Swatch with the nice croco Swatch strap...An I'm biding on another special one too, at the same seller here in my country, who sold me my first Swatch!
