Poll

Which strap should be my Summer Combo for the Mondaine Big-Date GMT?

Stop being a cheapskate and order up a black NATO. 9

Followup to yesterday's post, of course. While I liked the Mondaine / Bond NATO combo, I didn't love it. And the Mondaine Watch Co. is one of my favorites, so I'm not willing to settle for second best when it comes to summer shoes. So I took Bro. Larsons advice and ditched the stripes, as best I could:

But unfortunately Oops!, since I don't currently have a solid black 22mm NATO on hand, "as best I could" meant the Ricky Standard Combat NATO in Navy blue.

An improvement, I reckon, but still I couldn't help but wonder how a black Combat NATO would work. I am confused Luckily, thanks to the magic of Gimp, it took only a few minutes to find out: Wink

So what say you, me Poor Man's Watch Forum brothers? Call the Navy good? Or invest a few bucks in a black NATO?

TIA!

It's a landslide, 2-to-1 in favor of the black NATO. Since that's the way I was leaning anyway Wink, I'll be placing an order today. Sniper ready!

liked the blue just fine till I saw the black, why not spend a few more $ to have it pop out at ya every time you look
Anonymous User 136 April 18, 2010 06:58PM

Has to be black! How about on of those super light nylon weave straps from your Uncle? (n/t)

jeremd676 132 April 18, 2010 06:35PM

Alas, they're not available in 22mm. Frowning

Which is a shame, for they're a great strap for hot & humid conditions!

Hirsch makes a wicked cool looking carbon fiber strap that would look kick ass on that watch.......it might be because I dont like nato straps....but it ould look really good on it....

I voted "stop" but would also like for you to consider a NATO option including a thin red stripe or thread.

Not even sure such an animal exists, but I agree with the idea brought up yesterday suggesting it would compliment the seconds hand...
Nuvolari 138 April 18, 2010 05:38PM

Mesh . . . and it doesn't need to be a thick one for this watch >>>

It's not a diver that needs a massive mesh. Indeed, a thinner one . . . say 2mm or so . . . would actually look and wear better with it.

Note: Also doesn't need to be a Milanese from Milan either. A ConeHeadanese from France . . . or even one from Hong Kong would work equally as well.

{sigh} Of course you're right, Professor. Gif Attachments

The Staib mesh just flat worked on the Mondaine, truly a Match Made In Heaven. But it works just a wee bit better on The Commander.. a Match Made In Seventh Heaven. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

And, I never could get past the fact that the Staib set me back almost as much as the itself. Eek!

Right. The Staib is 3.2mm, and borders on overkill for the Mondaine. But The Commander needs it. If not more! A 5mm mesh (if I could find such a thing.. are you listening, Watchadoo? Laughing) would not be out of line, with that behemoth.

Perhaps I should take me Inner Scotsman out of the picture, temporarily. Plying him with whisky usually works. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off Then, whilst he's not looking, order up a budget 2mm mesh. Wink

The one fly in the ointment is that, given my over-sized wrist, finding a mesh to fit is extremely problematic. I am crying A hybrid like the Staib, with solid-link inserts, is my only sure-fire Mesh Solution. Just order up however many extension links I need. Some sliding-lock 2-pieces will work, but finding one that's of sufficient length is a real gamble. Frowning

Hmmmmm. Lemme go see how I'm stocked for poitín... Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

Chris L 145 April 18, 2010 02:36PM

In my heart, I knew that. I am crying

But me Inner Scotsman keeps insisting that Navy is close enough! I am angry!
Ricky Lee 149 April 18, 2010 04:20PM

Seeing it on the simulated black NATO clinched it for me>>>

Black is the way to go.

It's a happy day, a new watch arrived Completed action item from last weekend

April 22, 2010 06:29PM

A followup to the Mondaine poll, of course. I ordered the strap from Watchrick.com early Monday morning, and had it in my hand on Wednesday evening. Great service! Clapping! Gotta love the free shipping, since it makes ordering a single strap guilt-free. Wink

So here you go, the Real Deal this time, no Gimping required:

Kind of anti-climactic, I admit.. indeed, I'm not sure the Gimped photos aren't better! Oops! Smile

Sure is nice to be able to actually wear it, though, vs. just looking at a photo and wishin'. Laughing

Thanks again for your input, me Brothers WIS Honeymoon, I couldn't be happier with the combo! Thumbs up!

Cheers!
