This one has been with me since the fall of 2009, but it's only recently that I've upgraded it to Keeper Status. It was part of my Tom Swift Sales/Trade Fodder for the first year or so, but never attracted any serious offers.

But then a funny thing happened. As I mentioned to Bro. Ed recently..

I've said it many times, but Guess Watch Company is a much under-rated brand, and doesn't get nearly the attention from The Average WIS that they deserve.

This is the only one I currently own.. It came to me in a job-lot donation to Ricky Lee's Home For Wayward Wristwatches and, if I'm honest, it's not a style that I'd have ever bought meself. However, it has some specific features I love, the main one being the bezel with its clear acrylic overlay that, in person, appears to be yards deep. WIS Honeymoon Then, too, the build quality is excellent (it uses a TMI/SII VX3-series pointer-date movement), and the overall fit & finish is superlative. While I haven't owned all that many Guess watches, I have had quite a few cross me workbench for service, and I've found this to be true of the marque in general. They're real sleepers, IMHO!

I started to see more and more Guess watches at Ye Olde Watch Shoppe. And the more I saw, the more I liked them! So I came to have a belated and somewhat grudging respect for this one. winking smiley Somewhere along the line, without my ever quite realizing it, I came to consider it A Keeper. So when I discussed it with Bro. Ed t'other day, the fact that I'd never properly reviewed it - and had only 2 old photos! - was a bit embarrassing. I am blushing Hopefully this QnD Watch review will right that wrong...

I do have to correct one statement I made to Bro. Ed, when I referred to the "clear acrylic bezel overlay". In fact..

..there is no discrete "overlay", nor is it acrylic. Rather, the watch uses a mineral glass crystal which extends to the outer periphery of the bezel, completely covering it. That's what I get for relying on memory when posting about a watch, instead of pulling it out for a look-see. Laughing Out Loud!

Very unusual design, that crystal! It appears to have a flange on the inside, which sockets down to fit a gasket on the I.D. of the dial well proper. I'd sure hate to try to find a replacement, I can tell ye that! Thing is..

..it does have a pretty hefty chip in the crystal near 8 o'clock. Still, it's not too bad, and doesn't substantially detract from my enjoyment of the watch.

Gold-plated base-metal case, 38mm X 45.5mm X 13mm thick, with 18mm lugs. The SS caseback is a screwdown, though the crown is not. The movement is an SII/TMI VX3-series, a 10-1/2 ligne 1-jewel pointer date powered by a #373 cell. Not a common model, but they seem to be a stalwart movement, just as you'd expect from Seiko-Epson. I believe the dressy Visage pointer-date is the only other VX3-powered watch in the collection...

The OEM strap was a rather distinctive leather-nylon hybrid (see HERE) which was, of course, far too short for me ankle-sized wrist. Not sure the single-run nylon is the ideal solution (I've thought about trying a rubber strap), but it works alright I reckon, and is certainly expedient.

On thing's for sure..
