Looks pretty cool, but what's up with the crystal? (n/t)

Robmks 85 April 25, 2010 05:13PM

It had an INTERNAL cyclops, and it Had To Go. URL
It's a domed crystal, too, so I supported the watch on one of my press dies. Got out the two essential tools for cyclops removal, my Weller soldering gun and 'fat' X-acto with chisel-tipped blade and... popped the crystal right out of the case. Eek! I am angry!

Once the crystal was out of the case, no need to be gentle. So I went MCV-Cycops-Removal-Berserk on it. It couldn't resist my butane Zippo, which is halfway to a blowtorch, and it popped right off. Thanks for the inspiration, Marc! Smile

Oh, and not to worry.. the black residue came right off. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off!

Ricky Lee 74 April 27, 2010 12:10PM

Looks good. How about the crown guard? You can make it fit. Laughing (n/t)

Robmks 82 April 26, 2010 09:34PM

I could. And I did consider it..
But I'd have to butcher modify the crown guard to make it work, and I like to keep these mods reversible, when possible.

And I gotta say, I like MM cases without the crown guard!

Ricky Lee 90 April 27, 2010 12:06PM

Sure I was trying for "catalog shots". So, of course Ricky's Watch Photography Axiom© came into play. Frowning Still, these photos do at least illustrate the combo I'm using..

..on the Clockwork GeOrange, and are thus worthy of sharing with you, me Brothers.

And speakin' of the combo.. yeah, I know that 'twas just earlier this month that I was bragging on the vintage Waterbourne / Alpha Ti handwinder as a Match Made In Heaven. Oops! What can I say? I am confused This poor panny homage needed the Waterbourne, whilst the Alpha is perfectly happy with the recently acquired Standard Combat NATO in gray (no photos of that combo yet {sigh}).

I'm certainly happy with the combo and, indeed with the watch overall. It turned out to be quite eye-catching, if I do say so meself. Blushing This was borne out by the number of comments I got at work - no less than four yesterday, and two more today. The comments yesterday may have owed a little to the fact that I wore it in conjunction with the Mega Militare, I admit. Indeed, one young lady specifically mentioned my "matching" watches. Mind you, the lass is quite familiar with my penchant for Dual-Wristin', and the comment was not about that, but the fact that the two were Aesthetically Compatible. Laughing Hey, if you're gonna Go Stereo, go Hole Hog I say. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off (And, in case ye're keeping track, Dear Constant Reader, that was the first time I didn't wear the Trintec ZULU-01 to work in more than a month. Wink)

But the GeOrange was solo today (Sorry.. running late Eek!, couldn't be bothered with choosing a second watch Wink), and one of the conversations included a semi-serious offer to buy it. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off And "semi" mostly because I responded with a stratospheric price designed to discourage that line of discussion. Smile Had I given the bloke a reasonable price (oh, say a mere 300% of what I've actually got in it Laughing), I reckon dude just might have gone for it. Anyway, this is threatening to turn into a full-fledged Honeymoon WIS Honeymoon, and that doesn't happen with every Frankenwatch I cobble together, I assure you.

There was some controversy over whether the Mido chrono did justice to the Garry Templeton Jstrap. Smile

While I grew accustomed to the combo, and really really liked it, I must admit that I never fell head-over-heels in love with it. Oops!

But I never give up! I am angry! There has to be a watch that's a perfect match for the Jstrap. So.

What say you? Laughing Better?

I tend to associate thick bazeball straps wearing Pre-V buckles with the Panerai planform, so I had to try it out.

A more suitable match? Image Attachments URL

Ricky Lee 197 September 11, 2010 02:57PM

Yes, I didn't want to burst your bubble with my opinion of the previous combo! Laughing (n/t)

MCV 78 September 11, 2010 06:55PM

I have to vote for this being a better combo.
No matter how finely crafted, the strap is recycled from sporting-goods. It really lends itself better to a "sport" style watch. The Mido just demands to have some kind of casual-wear kind of shoes, and not a pair of Nike's. Winking

Chris L 84 September 11, 2010 04:51PM

The strap definately suits the style and character of that watch. (n/t)

Paul J Costa 68 September 11, 2010 04:46PM

That's definitely the kind of case for that strap. Looks goooooood. Thumbs up! (n/t)

I've done this conversion enough (3 or 4 times.. I'm losing count! Oops! Wink) that I'm starting to think of it as something of a trademark. Smile
