Alright, who swiped my 4th wheel?!
-Ricky
You see that big brass wheel on center, that is >>

backmost? If it revolves once a minute it is your 4th wheel. If it revolves once an hour, it is your center wheel.
Please report back.
Once per minute it is. What a relief! (n/t)

Aha! another mystery solved! Putting the 4th wheel >>

Or perhaps the 4th wheel is coaxial with the center wheel >>

center is buried in there closer to the dial. Inquiring minds want to
know!

That makes indeed a GREAT duo with your other buren. And they wil be -buren- from each other,as buren in Dutch means neighbors Be sure Ricky to put them homes beside in Watchbox county
Gorgeous!

I like the numbers a lot...especially the typeface. I agree that the lugs are awesome, too!
Sounds
like you're more than comfortable with detailed polishing. Have you
made up a polishing tutorial? If not, are there any tutorials on the
'net worth reading if I wanna learn?
Re: Have you made up a polishing tutorial?
Ricky Lee -- October 24, 2009 10:14PM (Views: 36)
No, not really. I've discussed the process in some detail several times, but nothing you could call an actual "tutorial".
I'll hit the highlights for you, though.
*
Unless you're absolutely totally positive about the water resistance of
the watch in question, remove the movement and work on the bare case.
'tis a good idea regardless, and I do it that way perhaps 90% of the
time. No need to mask off the case, as I've seen some folks do. You'll
want to give the case a light polishing anyhow!
* Avoid powered polishing rigs (Dremels and such) like the plague. Too easy to end up with a "wavy" crystal.
* Begin with wet/dry sandpaper, and use it wet. This is key!
*
The specific grades of paper you use will depend on how deep the
scratches are. I generally start with 220 grit, then progress through
320, 400, 600, and finally 800 grit. If the scratches are particularly
deep, I will start with 180 grit. If the scratches are exceptionally
fine, I'll start with 320 grit.
* Technique is up to you, and
what works for one may not work for another. I do it two ways -
sometimes I just fold over a square of sandpaper, and freehand polish
by holding the watch in my left hand and the paper in me right,
striving for a random orbital pattern. Other times I place the
sandpaper on an old mouse pad and hold the watch in the right hand. The
mouse pad adds some cushion or "give", and works really well with some
practice. It can also be quite a lot faster than freehand, but with the
drawback of not allowing you to get right up to the edge of the bezel.
The most thorough job wil actually employ both methods for full coverage.
* Whatever your technique, keep the sandpaper wet, wet, wet. Use plenty of water. Don't skimp!
*
When you've finished with the 800 grit sandpaper, it's time to break
out the Brasso. Use a clean fine-weave cloth and, again, a random
orbital pattern. Clean the workpiece at intervals and inspect it.
Pretty soon there'll come a point where you'll go "Whoa! That looks great!" But even then, there's one last step.
*
Finish up with a whitening toothpaste. I like Aquafresh 2X Extreme
Whitening, but that's only because it's what I use to brush me gnashers
,
and so 'tis handy. Any brand of whitening toothpaste will work fine,
though. Use another clean, dry, fine-weave cloth with the same random
orbital pattern.
* Do not skip the last step! You'll be
tempted to, as the crystal will look pretty darned good after the
Brasso. But the toothpaste will provide that last little bit of
clarity, and will make all the difference in the world. Trust me.
* Reassemble the watch and enjoy!
Hope that helps. And for the kind words about the Buren!

..but the hour and seconds hands are
flared downwards at the tip.. to clear the domed crystal, I guess.
Pretty unusual. You can kinda sorta see it in this photo.

Seemed to me the watch might look better with a more plain, traditional
style. But after wearing it for a bit, I've grown to them!
