I posted a "heads up" on an inexpensive vintage Buren automatic last week and, while I had no real desire to acquire a 2nd example of a model I already own, the same seller had this other Buren... Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

The description was basically the same as for the gold auto..

eBay seller
Vintage Men's Buren 17 Jewels Mechanical Wind Watch. Seems to run well. There are scraches/imperfections. I don't warrant these used watches at all. Shipping is 6.00 US 48 States only.
..and the price was identical, at $18.99 shipped. Sure, you're right, I jumped on it like a hen on a June bug. Wink

It's "old-school standard-sized", at 34mm x 42mm, and the case is in VGC. While it is of plated base metal construction, there is no brassing evident anywhere, not even on the crown. There are some scratches, obviously, but no outrageous dents or dings.

There are a few scratches on the crystal, too..

..including a real hum-dinger at 6. The crystal is quite "hazy" overall, too..

..though, being acrylic, I'm sure it will polish up nicely. You can't tell it from the photo, but the dial is pristine, and the hands very nearly so.

Screwdown caseback..

Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..and 'tis a "Steel Back", you'll note, not a "Stainless Steel Back". Removing the back reveals..

Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..a stamped steel dust/anti-magnetic cover over the movement. Something of a trademark for Buren, perhaps, as my gold automatic is also so equipped.

I couldn't decide which movement photo I liked best..

Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..so you get two.

And the challenge to bjohnson - you seem to be an absolute whiz at identifying obscure movements, so I'm wondering what you can tell me about this one. No "Swiss Made", you'll note, nor one on the dial. The case is marked "Hong Kong", so I'm wondering if the watch might be entirely Asian-made. I had no luck with the Ranfft database, nor can I find any real information on "Standard Time" in general. The closest thing in the Ranfft 'base looks to be this..

..Buren caliber 1420. The main bridge is a similar shape, though it lacks the removable cap plate as seen on my movement. Also, the balance appears to be entirely different. And this is a Swiss-made movement. I am confused Still, I wonder if the ST might be based on the cal. 1420, with production being moved to the far east. In any case, any insight you can offer would be most appreciated.

Oh, and lest I forget, the "I-told-you-so" for MCV - this thing runs excellent! WIS Honeymoon Maybe a wee bit faster than I'd like - it checks +18/sec after 26 hours - but it winds and sets smoothly, has great amplitude, and is clean as a whistle. See, "Seems to run well" is a Good Thing. Wink Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

You see that big brass wheel on center, that is >>

Please report back. Laughing

Once per minute it is. I am smiling What a relief! Wink, wink... (n/t)

It's also a higher beat rate than I at first though - see the "correction" reply to bjohnson.

Thanks for making me take a second look! Wink

Or perhaps the 4th wheel is coaxial with the center wheel >>
Dave Murphy -- October 17, 2009 01:02AM (Views: 39)
>> on this movement. So, we see the 4th at the rear, and the center is buried in there closer to the dial. Inquiring minds want to know!

Ricky Lee -- October 17, 2009 02:27AM (Views: 60)
I took a closer look, and the INT cartouche is clear as a bell under the loupe. And, while you can't read it in the photo, it says '451' right above said INT cartouche. The caliber 451 looks identical to the 450, and is the same size, but is of a slightly later vintage (1968 to 1970) and operates at a higher beat rate (21600 A/h vs. 18000 A/h).

Thanks again mate! Thumbs up!

Update and new photos of my latest acquisition. Post contains photos Post contains linked URL

 October 24, 2009 03:25PM

Photos precipitated by pure guilt. I wore this one to work every day last week, and was tempted to post it in the roll call a couple of times. But I didn't even have a photo showing the watch with strap attached. Frowning Eek! So, while the light was miserable yesterday, I broke out the camera anyhow, and here's the result;

Alas, my supply of round tuits is a bit low at the moment I am crying so, no, I haven't polished the crystal yet. Frowning Well.. not really. I did give it a cursory (very cursory) going over before I shot the photos. But I definitely need to sit down with the polishing materials and spend some quality time with this li'l guy.

Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

My initial estimation of the accuray was pretty much spot on - the watch gains ~ 18 to 20 seconds/day. I synched it to time.gov on Monday.. well, the Durowe 451 doesn't hack, so by happenstance my actual setting was -34 per Official Atomic Time. In any case, on Friday it checked just over a minute fast. Perfectly acceptable, even outstanding for a watch of this vintage and unknown service history.

Overall I couldn't be more pleased with this one, and consider it the perfect stablemate..

I like the numbers a lot...especially the typeface. I agree that the lugs are awesome, too!

Sounds like you're more than comfortable with detailed polishing. Have you made up a polishing tutorial? If not, are there any tutorials on the 'net worth reading if I wanna learn?

Re: Have you made up a polishing tutorial? Post contains photos
Ricky Lee -- October 24, 2009 10:14PM (Views: 36)
No, not really. I've discussed the process in some detail several times, but nothing you could call an actual "tutorial".

I'll hit the highlights for you, though.

* Unless you're absolutely totally positive about the water resistance of the watch in question, remove the movement and work on the bare case. 'tis a good idea regardless, and I do it that way perhaps 90% of the time. No need to mask off the case, as I've seen some folks do. You'll want to give the case a light polishing anyhow!

* Avoid powered polishing rigs (Dremels and such) like the plague. Too easy to end up with a "wavy" crystal. Scary!

* Begin with wet/dry sandpaper, and use it wet. This is key!

* The specific grades of paper you use will depend on how deep the scratches are. I generally start with 220 grit, then progress through 320, 400, 600, and finally 800 grit. If the scratches are particularly deep, I will start with 180 grit. If the scratches are exceptionally fine, I'll start with 320 grit.

* Technique is up to you, and what works for one may not work for another. I do it two ways - sometimes I just fold over a square of sandpaper, and freehand polish by holding the watch in my left hand and the paper in me right, striving for a random orbital pattern. Other times I place the sandpaper on an old mouse pad and hold the watch in the right hand. The mouse pad adds some cushion or "give", and works really well with some practice. It can also be quite a lot faster than freehand, but with the drawback of not allowing you to get right up to the edge of the bezel. The most thorough job wil actually employ both methods for full coverage.

* Whatever your technique, keep the sandpaper wet, wet, wet. Use plenty of water. Don't skimp!

* When you've finished with the 800 grit sandpaper, it's time to break out the Brasso. Use a clean fine-weave cloth and, again, a random orbital pattern. Clean the workpiece at intervals and inspect it. Pretty soon there'll come a point where you'll go "Whoa! That looks great!" But even then, there's one last step. LOL

* Finish up with a whitening toothpaste. I like Aquafresh 2X Extreme Whitening, but that's only because it's what I use to brush me gnashers :-), and so 'tis handy. Any brand of whitening toothpaste will work fine, though. Use another clean, dry, fine-weave cloth with the same random orbital pattern.

* Do not skip the last step! You'll be tempted to, as the crystal will look pretty darned good after the Brasso. But the toothpaste will provide that last little bit of clarity, and will make all the difference in the world. Trust me. LOL

* Reassemble the watch and enjoy!

Hope that helps. And Thanks! for the kind words about the Buren!

Cheers!

-Ricky
