..was to begin the refurbishment process on this Buren;

Lookin' a bit rough. But it runs solid as a rock, with excellent amplitude, and the movement is clean..

It's marked "STANDARD TIME" and "25 JEWELS", (caliber?) "452", and bears the little "INT"-in-a-shield logo you see at 'bout 11 in the photo. Seems like a solid journeymanlike piece of work, if not exactly a work of art, like my UT or Clinton. But I've got a bit of interest in Buren from a different angle, since me honey, Pamela, owns one. You can see photos of it HERE. An unremarkable ladies watch, not on the radar of most testosterone-fueled WIS. I am smiling... But the teensy-tiny 17J movement (of which, alas, I have no photo handy I am sad...) is a work of art and runs like.. well, like a Swiss Watch. Laughing out loud! It impressed me enough when she first showed it to me that I researched the marque a bit, and I think what I found bears repeating...

Buren was named after the location of is initial start up at a little village in Switzerland called Buren, located on the banks of the Aare. The firm started in 1842 making watch parts. In 1873, Buren started making complete watches and called themselves F Suter & Co.

F Suter & Co. continued with varying success to make watches with the trade name of 'Buren' for several years until it was taken over by the British firm of H Williamson Ltd in 1898. H Williamson Ltd, specifically bought the Buren factory to supply Swiss parts for the watches he was making in the UK. This later lead to a court case where he was found guilty of selling 'English Made' watches with Swiss parts in them. While H Williamson Ltd owned the Buren brand, they generally allowed the company to continue on its own with them just being the Parent company and receiving parts from them. By 1905, Buren were making 500 watches a day. Many of them for the parent company, but some were sold in Germany and the USA under the Buren name.

By 1949, Buren were back producing 22 different calibers for watches. In 1954, they patented the mini-rotor for automatic watches. This was a major achievement as the smaller rotor meant that it could be sink flush with the watch movement, so making automatic watches a lot slimmer.

Buren sold many watches and movements with other companies names on them such as Elgin and were often used in Railroad Watches because of their accuracy and reliability. Probably because of this, and the fact that Hamilton Watch Co. of America were known suppliers of Railroad Watches, Hamilton bought Buren from the Swiss in 1966. Under Hamilton's control, the first self winding Chronograph using the mini-rotor was introduced. Hamilton, who was well known in the US for their 'Railroad Watches', marketed Buren watches under their own name, one example is the Hamilton 971 which was a Buren watch. Hamilton also continued to market Buren watches under the Buren name until they again went back into Swiss hands in 1971. In this year SIHH, who owned Omega and Tissot, bought the Hamilton watch Co. However, ironically, it was this Swiss company who finally closed down the Buren factory in 1972.

A worthy history, it seems to me, and I also kinda like the fact that we'll have "matching watches". Wink, wink ... So the plan is to put this 'un through a full-boat spare-no-expenses refurbishment. Not that it'll take much, I am smiling... New 30.7 mm hi-dome acrylic crystal will be the only real expense - I've already got a new caseback gasket. The movement/dial/hands are tip-top, and the case will clean up just foine. Depends on how bad I get soaked for the crystal, o' course, but I hope to be able to bring the job in for under $20. Wink, wink ... Thirty-five tops! Laughing!

T'anks for readin', y'all!

I know y'all have been holding your breath Laughing! waiting for me to finish this one, since I mentioned it as far back as March 10, when I first introduced the concept of The Tom Swift Method of Old Wristwatch Refurbishment. Then there was the official "project kickoff" post of March 21 (above). The Before Photo from that post is HERE. Poor sad little watch. I am sad... But {cue "Six Million Dollar Man theme voiceover "We have the technology to make it right! Wink, wink ... Laughing! Thumbs Up!

I ordered up a crystal from my good friend Otto Frei, and it arrived yesterday. A Stella Wedge-Ledge High Dome Acrylic, Otto said to order 1/4 mm larger than the crystal aperture. This meant a a 30.70mm xtal, since the watch measured 30.5mm. Imagine my consternation, then, when said xtal arrived and proved to measure 30.93mm actual. Scary! So they mean the 1/4mm is already added in? Crazy, man! No, but then.. Oops! My goof! I am confused... Scary! In any case, 'twas a severe test for the...

Buren automatic

One minor disappointment here, as the regimen of Barkeepers Friend on a toothbrush, then the Swiss Army Knife, then Micro-Fiber cloth rag (switching to Brasso for the last 120 seconds of the 5 minute allotted time) polish revealed some micro-pinheads of tarnish up the side of the watch. But {cues Doris Day WIS honeymoon Tempting Devil!) "Que sera, sera". 'twas meant to be. Laughing!

Movin' on, we see the subcomponents cleaned up and ready to assemble.

..Caveman Watchmaker's Tom Swift Seal Of Approval. Wink, wink ...

Seriously, Truth To Tell {cross my heart and hope to die Laughing!}, there is only one visible flaw that semi- bothers me. I am sad... But just. IOW I am sad..., not I am crying! Laughing!. A picayune piss-ant thing.

See it?

No?

Look closer! I am angry!!

OK, OK, tis the 'speck' on the minutes hand. I am sad...

Try as I might, it did not wanna come off. But then the heaviest ammo I was willin' t'bring to bear was blotting it wi' Rocico, so mayhap I just were'nt brave enough. Oops! My goof! But prudence is the major part of valor, hence... Laughing!

Ahhhhh, see above Johnny. 'I think I just did Wink, wink ... though 'twas quite unintentional. Laughing!

I figure it like this.. The Buren came in a lot of 5 watches for $42 shipped. So $8.40 for the watch. Add in $4.50 for the new crystal (big spender, huh?! I am smiling...) plus, oh, let's say 3-cents for the caseback gasket and a nickels worth of Rodico.

So, $12.98 grand total. Rounding up I make it 52-cents per jewel! Heck, even if ye add in the whopping $2.18 for the strap, I'm still under 61-cents per jewel. I am smiling...

Hah! {shakes fist} Try to hornswaggle a card-carryin' Scotsman, will ye? I am hopping mad!

Wink, wink ... I am smiling... Laughing!
