The donor came to me in the Caveman Cornucopia, courtesy of Bro. J. Brice Hébert. It's one of the watches that I forgot to list in the original post, and was in such rough condition that I didn't even bother to check for function 'til yesterday. But when I slipped in a new 373 cell it took right off, and that planted the seed. I put it on the desk in front of me this morning as I was drinking me coffee, and considered it. I concluded it was worth rescuing, as it uses a high-quality Swiss Made Watch or Movement movement, an ISA 307. But how to proceed? I stripped it down and took measurments, and quickly found that it wasn't a good match for any of the salvage cases I had on hand. Drat! Frowning

Then I remembered that I had 2 RickyCases in reserve and.. WooHOO! Thumbs up! A match! It's a happy day, a new watch arrived

'ere's what was left over, after I stripped the donor parts:

Pretty sad, you must admit. I am crying

But that's fine, as it means I feel no remorse for cannibalizing it for me own nefarious purposes. Laughing

I'll spare you the nitty-gritty, as the process has been documented here on several previous occasions. Suffice to say that the build went smoothly, and this was the final result:

Yup, a Wrangler, hence the RickyWatch v. 2.00W designation. Wink

While I'm partial to unbranded dials, Wrangler is at least a brand that I use, so that's a plus.

I'm also partial to a 24-hour inner chapter, so another plus. The pastel green dial appealed, too, since it's the first green-dialed RickyWatch..

Also fortuitous in that I've divested meself of all the other v. 2.xx RickyWatches, with only four v. 1.xx versions remaining in the collection. (The difference, in case you haven't been paying attention, is that v. 2.xx versions have the polygonal bezel vs. the plain round bezel of the v. 1.00 variants.)

And I think I like the new cinderblock photo backdrop. Wink

Fairly decent lume.

While I haven't tested the endurance, it certainly pops well out of the gate. And it wears..

..very well, as expected. (Hey, after building 24 of these things, it'd be a surprise if it didn't. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off)

So there you have it. What say you? Thumbs up or down?

This is the next-to-last case that I've got stockpiled, so I promise you, dear Constant Reader, that you won't have to suffer many more of these builds. Smile

..since you responded to the original thread.

It only lasted a few weeks, though, then I converted it over to a quartz movement.

But the RickyAuto is still intact..

..and I can't see that ever changing. Laughing

Pretty rare movement in that one, a German Made Watch or Movement-made Hermann Becker HB313:

I miss the Timex-powered RickyWatch, I must admit. I am crying That last case I have in reserve? It will be another Ricky, I am determined. This time for keeps! Smile

..pics taken by me, verify this to be true, and using an Elgin pocket watch movement from the early 1900?????.....yep, that's what it looks like. Forgive the plastic spacer, I'm working on a brass one. Cheers, greg

it's posing some interesting problems >
greg honeycutt -- November 28, 2009 10:23PM (Views: 21)
given the age of the movement, it doesn't have a typical crown/stem set-up. The stem is basically a square bit (I don't own a caliper small enough to measure it) and it sets and runs in the regular way, however the crown/stem is kept in place by the case, and not a button or the like in the movement.

And....the crown is at 12....typical. Shame too, cause it has a nice dial and beautiful blued hands. I'm going to redo the dial somehow, and rig the crown.....somehow.

I actually considered leaving it as a 6 eater, and place the crown on the bottom...somehow, once again. I'm determined, it will happen.
..............
more crap to make you wish you hadn't opened the link below.....no nudity, witty comments, or much anything of interest...cheers, greg

Sounds like you need a custom-machined widget to retain the stem, then. Smile

Can you not modify the dial feet so that it's possible to rotate the dial 90 degrees in relation to the movement? I am confused That way you can keep the crown at 3 o'clock?

If not, I'd recommend going with a more conventional movement, say an ETA 2801. I mean, I just can't see this working as a 12 (or 6) winder. Crazy! Loco! Sure, with the long lugs on the RickyCase, the crown would probably physically fit at either 12 or 6. After you machine a new hole for the stem, that is. Eek! But even so you'd be left with a superfluous crown guard at 3. Frowning Or am I missing something?

woohoo! Thumbs up! Might be my fave so far, nice work as always! (n/t)

I bookmarked the build pages a long time ago.

I personally like the v1 with the "normal" bezel. Laughing

Well.. I am pretty proud of them, make no mistake. Wink, wink... Image Attachments

No matter how you look at it, machining a custom watch case from a raw billet is not something Joe Blow can aspire to. Blushing

Simple as it is compared to some of the nightmares I'm presented in my professional capacity, 'tis still not a trivial accomplishment. Smile

That's obviously why I've retained the v. 1.xx versions for my own collection 4-to-1. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off
