But, no, not from a generous Brother er this time.
A
friend and co-worker just got back from a business trip to China, and
he brought back souvenirs for some of us. He's well aware that I'm mad
for watches, so (in his own words) there was only one choice for mine..

Yup! A Waving Chairman Mao Watch! I've always wanted one!

Sorry for the quick & even dirtier than usual photos. But the catalog shots will wait..
My pardner presented this to me by saying "I've got a watch that needs fixing.. and it's yours!" He went on to apologize, saying that the watch worked OK for the first couple of days, and then 'died'. "Must need a new battery.." he allowed. He was quite amazed when I wound her up & Mao took right off.
BTW, the handwinding is the one nit I'll pick with this watch. It winds
smooth, mind you, but the small (4.5mm) crown makes it tough for me
caveman fingers to find purchase.
Quite an unusual case design..

..quite
thick (13mm) in relation to the diameter (37mm), and the "crab leg"
lugs are taller than the crystal. And talk about high canon pinions..
this is the Mount Everest of canon pinions! By needs, of course, to clear Mao's waving hand.
The caseback..

..is
a screwdown, and quite well finished. I haven't gotten around to taking
a peek at the movement yet, but I don't reckon there'll be any
surprises there.
The Genuine Simulated Leather strap was way, way short, but for now it wears just fine on ye olde skunk NATO.

Chairman Mao would no doubt roll over in his grave at the thought of his signature watch on a NATO strap...

Very cool! So, what happened when you put the new battery in? (n/t)

Oddly enough, I couldn't figure out where to PUT the battery.

Oh man, if that has 18mm lugs, you're in for a real treat later this week!
DJM -- November 25, 2009 02:53AM (Views: 28) Don't know if you remember, but the yellow Raketa I bought came on an
olive drab NATO, and I said I was going to send it to you. Did so
Saturday, so it should be there any day. If olive drab isn't perfect
for that watch, what is?
YES!

Very nice Ricky, but if you go carryin' pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow. (n/t)

Cool!. Does Mao's hand bob back and forth on a spring? (n/t)
Dave Murphy -- November 25, 2009 02:32AM (Views: 15)
Au contraire! Not a spring, but..
Ricky Lee -- November 25, 2009 11:01AM (Views: 29) ..his forearm is linked to the going works, so he waves in beat with the movement!
Which, of course, technically makes it an automaton akin to my "naughty watch".

A Red Chinese hand job timepiece! Oh, the horror! (n/t)
Allan Zirlin -- November 25, 2009 05:06PM (Views: 19)
Wow! By my count, I get 25 waves in 10 seconds, that is, >>
Dave Murphy -- November 25, 2009 01:08PM (Views: 21) >>25 waves forward, and 25 back. this equates exactly to 18000 vph.
I therefore conclude that the pallet lever has an extra-long pivot going through the dial, which serves as Mao's elbow.
18000 vph is probably perfect for that. just think what he would look like at 28800. . . Dave Somewhere on the South Shore of Lake Ontario
Re: ..just think what he would look like at 28800.

Nice score, but I do disagree about...
Chris L -- November 25, 2009 02:22AM (Views: 19) Mao spinning in his grave. I think he would be pleased to provide NATO
straps to the masses -- but only after conquering the entire western
world and nationalizing the factories making them.

You have a point. (n/t)

Catalog shots part 5. Another one for you, DJM!

One thing that took me by surprise is that this strap is barely long enough to work on this watch, even though it was fine on the Swiss Army. The culprit, of course, is the "crab leg" lugs:
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo
Due
to the height of the lugs, the strap loses 7 or 8mm as it goes up and
over on each side. In hindsight, 'twas to be expected, but sometimes
the obvious is anything but.

I still haven't opened it up for a Movement Photo (Soon! I swear! ) but it's keeping darned good time, ~ +12 to +14 sec/day.
I did try for a better photo of the back..
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo
..but here the improvement over the earlier Q&D photos is modest, if any. Can any of you Chinese-reading brothers translate?
Despite having no 'tail' left over..

..it wears very well on the NATO, and the combo is most pleasing to me. Thanks again Dan!

Looks great Ricky; matches Mao's clothes!
DJM -- November 29, 2009 11:57PM (Views: 20) Been out of town, so that's why I haven't responded. Really glad it
worked out. Also looked awesome on the swim army. I get the feeling
that's going to be a very versatile strap for you.
