Day 7 (June24): Williams, AZ > Las Vegas, NV
Comparatively short haul today (about 220 miles) so we slept late & checked out at 10:55. Got our money's worth at the Econo Lodge, fer sure.
It was 11:30 by the time we got the bike rigged & rolled, under a clear blue sky with mid-80 deg temps. This was the view approx. an hour into the ride:
Desert Vista near Kingman, AZ And the temps had gone way, way up by that time. I forget exactly where, but we saw a thermometer reading of 104F somewhere along the way. We were drinking water by the liter, and sweatin' it back out as fast as we drank it. Barely had to visit the facilites at all. Just brutally hot.
At one point we'd been in the saddle for about an hour and a half, and were more than ready for a break.. but we were in the boonies, with no likely spot. So when we hit Dolan Springs, AZ and saw a sign for ice cream, you never saw two happier campers!
Dari King / Chocolate Factory, Dolan Springs, AZ Ice cream has never tasted so good to me! I didn't even mind that it was an 8-mile side trip off the main road.
Thus fortified, we continued on & soon reached the Nevada border;
Hoover Dam, view from AZ side Truthfully, I was a bit underwhelmed by the dam. Yes, intellectually I know that it's a great engineering achievement. But coming right after the Grand Canyon.. well, let's face it, no work of man can match the grandeur of nature.
The traffic was stop & go across the dam itself, and the extreme temps and slippery nature of the pavement made it a bit of an ordeal. I coasted though the whole downhill half, engine off. We got across without much ado, though, and from there 'tis a mere 20 miles to Sin City;
View from the saddle, Las Vegas, NV We checked into the Best Western near the airport at 15:30;
Airport Best Western, Las Vegas, NV Very good accomodations.. for the price they had better be! We paid triple the price of the previous day's lodging.. and that includes a 20% off coupon! But the room was clean and spacious, had a view of sorts, the Wi-Fi worked flawlessly, and the guest laundry (of which we in sore need) was next door to our room. So, all things considered, a for this hotel.
After a quick shower and a brief nap, 'twas off to The Strip. Alas, I had to leave the camera behind (no cameras allowed in the casinos), but I suspect the neon dazzle of Vegas is something most of y'all have seen already. We dined on $5.95 prime rib at the San Remo, fed the slot machines there & at the MGM Grand, had a few cocktails, etc. Pam was nearly $400 up on the slots at one point.. but she's not one for quitting while she's ahead, and we came out about $50 down for the night. Ah well, about what I'd expected.. and not as bad as I'd feared. It was about 01:00 by the time we packed it in.
A great day, all in all. Hey, no weather, at least! Not unless you count the heat.. and, as for me, I'll take 100+ temps over rain, hail, and wind any day of the week!
