Day 4 (June 21):Grand Junction CO > Cedar City, UT
Great night in Grand Junction. I highly recommend the Grand Vista Hotel, if you're ever there. When I complained that the Wi-Fi in our first room didn't work (it was way out at the far end of the hotel), they switched us to a suite at no extra charge. Good folks! Comfy bed, too, and I got a solid 8 hours of sleep.. something I rarely manage at home!
We spent the first two hours of the day touring the Colorado National Monument Park in Grand Junction;
Colorado National Monument Park, Grand Junction, CO It's a 25 mile loop over narrow, winding roads, and features some great scenery:
Colorado National Monument Park, Grand Junction, CO It was the highlight of the day, no doubt about it. In fact, it was so good I've just gotta share one more;
Colorado National Monument Park, Grand Junction, CO After departing Grand Junction we picked up I-70 and crossed into Utah, picked up I-15 and headed south. The Canyonland area of Utah is awesome in it's own way.. but desolate. Pam commented "No wonder the Mormons were able to settle here.. no one else wanted this land." And there's more than a grain of thruth in that. The land was considered wasteland until well into the 20th century. But there's a magnificence to it's desolation that was eventually recognized. Here's a sample;
Canyonlands area, Utah See what I mean? Magnificent Desolation.
You'll also note the storm off in the distance. Yep, arid land though this is, we did indeed encounter rain. Just lucky, I guess. It didn't amount to much, though, and we made our way to Cedar City, UT only a little bit damp.
Alas though the Super 8 in Cedar City advertised "Hi-Speed Wireless Internet".. it was anything but. The best signal I ever got was 12%, and it kept dropping out altogether. Ah well, so it goes. At least the bed was fine.
