Timex Basic Handwind
I sort of consider Timex to be the quintessential American 'everyman's watch', and decided I needed a vintage mechanical example of the marque. I bought this one in January of '05 off , for the princely sum of $12 (including shipping). It came on a period Speidel Twist-O-Flex, which was too small for my wrist (naturally!), and I swapped on a generic Chinese bracelet:
It's in quite decent shape, with the worst flaw being a deep scratch near the 10 (The scratch, oddly enough, doesn't seem to show up in photographs, yet is quite evident to the naked eye). While it's not one of my most-worn watches, I am fond of it, and it's been a stalwart little watch.
Here are some recent photos:
Let's get back to the basics...

2013-09-15 Addendum: Oddly enough, as is generally considered an "American" brand, this one was made in the United Kingdom. OK, OK! So it says "ASSEMBLED IN TAIWAN" on the caseback. But it does indeed say "UK 3054311682" on the dial (Which translates to Catalog #30543, caliber 116 movement, manufactured in 1982).
I admit that I haven't worn it in a month of Sundays. Upon reflection, I thinks it's the generic Chinese bracelet. It fits both me an' the watch, mind. But it's also a rattly, cheap-feeling hair-puller. I reckon if I came up with a better affixment I might wear the li'l guy more often. Probably I should just slap on an 18mm NATO and be done with it.
For a while, I thought this watch had to be among the last mechanical watches that made before going (for a period) exclusively quartz. Basically said as much when reviewing my Model T2D931AT, which "resurrected" the mechanical line in 2005. Well.. I was a few years off in my estimation, it would seem. In fact, Timex had a few 'winders in the catalog until 1996. Who knew?!-Ricky
