Sure it's the Timex Watch Co. Atlantis 100, of which ye've seen plenty of "incoming talk". Smile

Now, my reason for acquiring this one.. well, several reasons, actually. First, I've owned a very similar model for a couple of years, the Timex Ironman Triathlon model 731-A. That watch has Been Rode Hard And Put Up wet, both before and after it came to me, yet still runs like a champ. The Ironman line is every bit as tough as a G-Shock from a practical standpoint, IMHO, and that watch, beater though it may be, is testament to that toughness. The 731-A is my main go-to watch for Hazardous Duty, and will remain so for the time being.

Perhaps the most unique thing about the 731-A, though, is the bracelet. It's a resin/rubber-SS hybrid, which results in a "feel" unlike any other bracelet I've ever encountered. Very, very comfortable and light, I like it so much that I've considered buying another one, just because. Thing is, they're not easy to find, and when you do..

eBay photo

..they don't come cheap! Eek! So when Bro. bigbang made a post asking "What is the most traditional timex ironman available in the current lineup?", and I discovered that the Atlantis 100 (sporting essentially the same bracelet) could be had for a mere US $25.50 shipped.. well, it Seemed Like Fate. Smile

Honestly, until I tackled that bit o' research for bigbang, I had no idea these existed Blushing and, in particular, I thought that style of bracelet had long since been discontinued. Oops!

I don't blame the whole affair on Bro. bigbang, mind you. I consider the Timex Ironman line to be A Modern Classic, a sort of Everyman's Watch which arguably saved Timex Watch Co. from extinction. Hey! If it's a watch good enough for The President Of The United States, 'tis good enough for the likes o' me! Laughing

Of course, looked at another way, this may be the perfect antithesis of "The WIS Watch". Whistle Think about it. Quartz instead of mechanical and, worse, digital instead of analog. Resin case vs. SS (Tongue to you Bro. James T. Kirk©! Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off), somewhat rattly and decidedly non-solid link bracelet, "only" 40mm, etc. In short, no Snob Snob Appeal whatsoever. Smile Which, contrarian curmudgeon that I am, is A-OK by me! Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

The functions are:

* Time (12 or 24-hour display)
* Calendar (Day-Date)
* Chronograph (100 hour), Lap or Split divisions
* 2nd Timezone
* Alarm (two, main and/or 2nd timezone)
* Hourly Chime
* Countdown Timer
* Indiglo® w/ Night Mode
* 50 grams including one extra bracelet link

Note that Night Mode is not the "activate the illumination when you tilt your wrist" function that some Casios use (and which I detest! I am angry!), but rather a setting where depressing any pusher turns on the Indiglo® for 3 seconds. (Normally the Indiglo® activates only when you depress the pusher at 10 o'clock, and shuts off instantly when you release it.)

As mentioned the case is plastic resin (though with a metallic finish!) and the bracelet a resin/rubber and SS hybrid. The Caseback is SS, of the classic "flat plate with four screws" design. Simple, robust, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to service. Thumbs up! The dimensions make it "medium sized" at best, by modern standards: 40mm x 45mm x 10.5mm thick, with 19mm lugs. Or, looked at from me own personal POV, "perfect-sized". Wink

One really cool thing about the watch (IMHO!) is that the LCD is a bit of a chameleon. Normally the background is a sort of gray. But from certain angles..

Timex Atlantis 100 model T77517

..it takes on an amazing iridescent green hue. From other angles..

Timex Atlantis 100 model T77517
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..it appears to be a medium-bright blue. Other times is looks to be an almost-yellow tan. It's like four displays in one! Cool Alas, I suck at photography I am crying, and was unable to capture that latter. Blushing

Another area where I failed miserably Frowning was a Lume Indiglo® shot. 90% of the dozen+ attempts..

Timex Atlantis 100 model T77517

..simply looked like a blank turquoise screen. Crazy! Loco! At best..

Timex Atlantis 100 model T77517

..you could see a mere ghost of the numerals. Rest assured that to the naked eye it looks A-OK! Wink

Here 'tis in comparison with it's ancestor, the Ironman Triathlon 731-A...

Note the peas-in-a-pod look of the bracelets. It's more than just looks!

The OEM T77517 bracelet as supplied fits an 8-inch (20.3Cm) wrist max. The reason the 731-A is on nylon in that Tom Swift© Dual Wrist Shot™ is that I had to cannibalize it's bracelet of four links Oops! to make the Atlantis fit me ankle-sized wrist. Blushing The fact that the links do interchange, though, despite the watches being separated by ~ two decades, is IMHO a Very Good Thing, and a powerful recommendation of The Timex Way. Thumbs up!

One thing's sure...

..it wears Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr8! WIS Honeymoon I think 'tis safe to say It's A Keeper. Smile

Thanks as always, Dear Constant Reader, for your time and attention.

Cheers!

Watches there, each face to him a tiny and contained poem, a pocket museum, subject over time to the laws of entropy and of chance. These tiny mechanisms, their jeweled hearts beating. Wearing down, he knew, through the friction of metal on metal. He sold nothing unserviced, everything cleaned and lubricated. He took fresh stock to a sullen but highly skilled Pole in Oakland to be cleaned, oiled, and timed. Nice one!

I'm not a fan of digital watches, but they do have their place. For the price, that's a great one!

some comments and a question

First the comments:

1) Nicely designed face and I like the indiglo lighting.

2) Such a pity that the thing is so small. Perhaps Timex could make one in the 44mm range?

And now for the question:

Is the bracelet as bad as the comments on Amazon indicate? There are lots of people complaining about the pins coming loose from the resin case. This is a common problem with Casio resin cases, so I think they may be accurate.

I'm sure they could. But if they did, and increased the thickness commensurably, you'd end up with.. a ! Whistle

Seriously.. wristwatch size is a matter of taste, of course. And no pleasin' everyone! But, again, for my personal tastes Timex got the size juuuuust right on this one. Thumbs up!

Ahhhh.. dunno. I confess I haven't read the Reviews. How bad do they say it is? I am confused

Hang on... {wanders off to amazon.com}

{returns a half-hour later}

Oops! Yikes! Eek! Pretty bad indeed. I am confused

But...

There are lots of people complaining about the pins coming loose from the resin case.
..the complaints seem to center around the bracelet link-pins coming adrift, not a failure of the case or the springbars which attach bracelet to case. Indeed, if I'm reading it right, there's not a single instance of case or springbar failure.

However, the reviews are quite an eye-opener and it would seem that a full 10% of the customers have specifically experienced bracelet link-pins going astray. If you count more general complaints about the bracelet, including those that simply replaced the bracelet and didn't ding the watch for it, it'd be much higher. Oops! 25, maybe even 30%!

Still, a 4.1 Stars overall rating is pretty darned good, and many of the comments could be considered "raves".

"My last one lasted 7 years .. I ordered two of these."

"..ITS A GOOD AND CHEEP WATCH I WOULD BUY ANOTHER ONE ."

"I like the watch so much that I came here looking to see if I could get another one, I would put it in storage and have it just in case this one ever stops working."

"Over the past years I've owned two and if anything happens to them I'll buy another. They are that good!"

"..the fact that it can take so much abuse and still function properly as it did for 14 years is a testament to its durability. This is a watch that you will wear for a long time."

"..I think this watch is getting to be about 9 years old. ..I thought a watch of such extreme age could no longer be water resistant, but it survived a trip thought the washing machine."

And a number of reviewers specifically praise the bracelet! Among them..

"the band is great, it does not pull the hairs on your arm."

"I really like this watch a lot. I like it so much that this is the 4th one I have bought. .. My favorite part of the watch is the watch band."

Personally, I think 4.1 stars is pretty much on the mark. It's not The Perfect Watch, but then that's a Mythical Beast IMHO. A Great Watch? No.. that would be going too far, I think. But it's a very good watch! And at the roughly 47% discount I got, I think it may border on greatness, looked at in the viewpoint of Bang-For-The-Buck. Wink

This is a common problem with Casio resin cases..
I've got a pair of resin-cased Casios in the junk box meticulously cataloged spare parts stash. They run just fine and dandy, but the case is broken at the lugs' springbar hole. So yeah, pretty common I guess. However, I have never seen a Timex case fail in that fashion!

I dunno. Despite the negative reviews, I'm with that last amazon reviewer quoted. The bracelet's one of my favorite features of the Atlantis 100, too. My old Ironman 731-A's bracelet, which is functionally identical, has certainly withstood the test of time. And I got to say.. the pins in my bracelet fit pretty darned tight! Remember, I had to install 4 additional links, so I know of what I speak. Whistle

But, you know, I'm gonna keep a close watch on the link-pins all the same. Wink Thank you! for the heads-up.

Great review as always bro Ricky....and you did good with the price....

We sell the same model for 39.99.!!!! Also, as a boy I had a model similiar to your old war horse there......the only difference being mine was black and had a black timex rubber strap. I wish I knew what I did with that one!!!!

Re: We sell the same model for 39.99.!!!! Image Attachments URL

Oops! Highway Robbery! Eek!

Well.. to be fair, that's like 16% off the current MSRP.

Interestingly enough, the watch I received has an MSRP of $44.95 clearly marked on the packaging, though the Timex Watch Co. Official Web Site lists it as $48. I can only conclude that there's been a recent price hike, and my watch has been "in the pipeline" for a while...

I used to have one of those very bracelets sitting around.

Unfortunately for you, I sent it away to the Paperboy maybe 3 or 4 years ago. I think it came from my brother-in-law, as he puts Twist-O-Flex bands on any watch he buys.

Reviled as they generally are by us hard-core WIS, it's east to forget Oops! that the Twist-O-Flex™ is still very, very, very popular amongst the General Populace. Wink
