"It" being the 1st-generation Timex watch Atlantis 100, imported from Arkansas. Yep! The voodoo worked! thumbs up

First impressions, quick-n-dirty photos only. VERY quick-n-dirty! Oops! My mistake! Straight out of the box, not even wiped down.

The good and the bad:

Bad: The bracelet is at least 4 links shy of fitting me ankle-sized wrist. I'm frowning Gonna have to come up with a Plan B there!

Good: This thing is very nearly MINT! WIS Honeymoon Close inspection with a loupe convinces me that it's original, too! Not only has it never been refinished, I don't believe it's ever been touched up!

One (slight) scare is that it arrived with the time ~ 10 hours off, and the date set to Feb 15. Crazy! Loco! So I'm like "Great! The set mode is bolloxed! I'm frowning". But, no, apparently the former owner was smart enough to install a new battery, but not smart enough to set the time and calendar. Laughing Out Loud! That or he simply couldn't be bothered. In any case, all modes and pushers work perfectly, so I'm just happier'n a little dog with a big bone! smiling bouncing smiley

Thank you! again, Bro. Ed. WIS Honeymoon I owe ye one mate!

I would not be bothered to much with the bracelet...
I has straight end links and if you don't insist on solid links it can be eFlayed very cheap! Otherwise one of your Nato's would do the trick for you. Congrats with nice "NOS" piece! smileys with beer

Watch review Timex Atlantis 100 ca. 1989

Caveman001
April 27, 2013 02:42PM

This one arrived on 10 April, so I reckon it's high time for a Review. My thanks again to Bro. EdH, who gave me the heads-up on this one. Given the minty condition, it was a steal at ~ $45 shipped.

I've a soft spot for this specific model for several reasons. First, it's just a CooL cool smiley watch. Second, it's something of a Landmark Model for Timex watch (all SS case, ending a spell where they'd gone pretty much base-metal exclusively). Third, I maintain one for a co-worker, and have always admired it, despite it's somewhat rough condition. Fourth, I own the modern "homage version", so this Completes The Set, as it were.

The watch came on the OEM folded-link Jubilee bracelet, which was in just as good condition as the watch itself. Alas, it was also at least 4 links shy of fitting me ankle-sized wrist. I'm frowning I do have several Jubilee-style bracelets in The Boneyard, but the Timex links proved incompatible. If you're curious, there's a full suit of photos on the bracelet HERE...

So! Time for Plan B!

Under-strapped slightly on an 18mm United States of America-style Mil-strap. Works for me! Laughing Out Loud!

As mentioned earlier it is of full stainless-steel construction, 40.5mm X 45mm X 10.5mm thick, with 19mm lugs. The crystal is mineral glass, and the WR is 100M.

The caseback is a screwdown, and the "58" date code pegs this as an October, 1989 model.

The functions are:

* Time (12 or 24-hour display)
* Calendar (Day-Date)
* Chronograph (10 hour), Lap or Split divisions
* 2nd Timezone
* Alarm (two, main and/or 2nd timezone)
* Hourly Chime
* Countdown Timer (10 hour)
* LED Backlight (Not Indiglo)

While some scratches and scuffs are visible with the loupe (and the supersized photos), remember that The Camera Is Merciless. To the naked eye, it's well and truly Mint. Indeed, you'd be hard-pressed to tell that it ain't NOS!

One thing's sure...

It wears Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr8! WIS Honeymoon

But what's that? You'd like some Comparo Photos with the modern Atlantis 100?

Well sure! Happy to oblige!

The ca. 2012 Model T77517 is nearly identical in size, at 40mm x 45mm x 10.5mm thick, with 19mm lugs, 100M WR.

The key differences are resin case vs. SS, plate-type caseback vs. threaded, and plastic crystal vs. mineral glass. The functions are likewise a near-perfect match, with the exception that the modern watch has a 100-hour chrono and timer vs. the original's 10-hour units.

Got to say...

All true, IMHO! I couldn't imagine a pusher ever being accidentally activated. The bracelet is rather well-done, even if it's folded links and way to short for me personally. The data is presented well, and the WR is more than adequate. Also, these watches as rugged and reliable as a stone axe - you wouldn't believe the abuse my co-worker heaps on his, and it never misses a lick.

Ahhhh. not so much. In fact, these watches are known for the plastic bezel breaking. The 4 screw-tabs are very thin ( ~ .75mm), and that's the common failure point. My co-worker's watch (linked above) is missing the bezel entirely.

thumbs up review! A friend of mine has the modern version...
which was recently donated to him. A pity about the scuff mark on the name at the top. Other than that the watch is in great condition. Your vintage version is much more to my liking for all the obvious reasons. cool smiley

Got to say it - Wearing them both together reminds me that, while I may not ascribe to his views 100%, Cap'n Kirk does have a point about plastic watches. I am blushing

The 1989 version feels like a Main Battle Tank compared to the 2012 version. Laughing Out Loud!

Don't get too cocky. Whistling...

Taken alone, in absolute terms, I still like a plastic High-tech Synthetic Resin watch just fine. Yeah, even the 2012 Atlantis 100.

It's only when I wear it with the 1989 model that it seems.. Well, a bit "flimsy". winking smiley

Going-rate Report

Caveman001

July 17, 2013 07:13AM

Since I'd just set the Prologue to atomic time, that gave me the opportunity to check the Atlantis' accuracy. In the 98 days since I last set it, it had lost 32 seconds. If my math's right, that works out to a going rate of -.33 sec/day. Not exactly HEQ. Oops! My mistake! Though, of course, it blows 'most any mechanical away. thumbs up
