Ricky's Quest For A Part Three - and baby! >

As regular readers will know, I've been itching for a -powered flieger ever since the Impromptu Chicagoland Mini WIS Meet. And when I get an itch, I scratch it.
After giving it much thought, the prime criteria I selected for my search were;
And, while not essential, I had a (not much) shorter list of "It'd be nice if" features;
Yes, the criteria are ranked in descending order of priority..
I was prepared to be patient (riiiiight ) and do my research, so my first step was to park my butt in front of the PC for one of many multi-hour 'Research Sessions' (to the joy of me wife, I'm sure ).
I also posted a req for help here on the forum. And, and of course, the being the I got some good advice, both on the forum and via (an especial t'anks to MCV - I allllmost pulled the trigger on that TZ O&W! ).
But most suggestions had some serious drawback when judged against my search criteria. No display back on the O&W Oceanmaster which MCV suggested (and which was a steal at $150!), and it's really not a Flieger-themed watch. Or the Precista PRS-20 which RonJr suggested.. not only not -styled, no sub-seconds either. I could go on, but you get the point. That list's quite a tall order!
Eventually, after narrowly missing the Jurgen-Gallai and the Tourby (though perhaps not so narrowly in the case of the Tourby), I was just about resigned to going with a used piece.
Then I found this one;
Crappy photo notwithstanding, the watch meets all the prime criteria.. and nearly all the secondary! The exceptions being that it does not have a decorated movement..
..and no bracelet. But hey! For $295 I can live with a plain-Jane and a strap!
Oh, and the dial's not sterile, of course. And there lay the one aspect of this watch that gave me pause - the branding. The globe logo is OK.. kind of like it, even. But 'Time World'? Sounds like a theme park!
After doing a little homework, though, I decided I could live with the name, too. Best I can ascertain, Time World's a mom 'n' pop watch assembler, rather than a true manufacturer. They're based in Dornach, Switzerland, where commodity parts are thick on the ground, and their output is apparently very low. And, while it wasn't part of the search criteria, I realized that the idea of owning an obscure, little-known brand actually appealed to me. I mean, I seriously doubt I'll ever run across someone wearing another like it.. even in the company of WIS.
Now the long, sloooooow wait for the .
T'anks for lookin'!

Yup, sure 'nough, the dial's are dead ringers! I've never even heard of , much less a Tosco..and we've even got an icon! That's crazy!
That Erken's a stunning watch! Damn. Big . But then I'd have to dig it, right?
} Crown is different..
But o' course! I gots an crown on the Time World!
} ..but dial/hands seem
} to be the same.
Yeah, the way the main chapter indice is graduated to 1/5th seconds, the font of the hour numerators, the double red hash-mark at 12.. I concur, those dial are practically identical.
Hands on all three watches (Time World, Eberhard, and Erken) look the same, to me...
} Can't really tell about
} the case.
'eres a shot of a white dial version from TZ, you can see the profile of the case better..
And from the other side..
Yep, cases are pretty much identical too, I'd say.
The is undecorated also.. I s'pect mine will look like this..
I hope! ];-)
T'anks for the info, Wen.. You rock !

The TZ article from which I lifted the photos
..yeah, I'm thinkin' I did OK.
Ricky

Picked up the Time World bright and early this morning. Was on my way to work ( for working on Saturday ) so, sorry, no s yet.
Here is the seller's auction ...
There was an instant WTH?! factor upon unpacking the watch, as there are several anomalies. First and most obvious is that my watch has the seconds sub-dial at 9 o'clock. That was expected as the seller contacted me about 24 hours after the auction ended saying that, sorry, the last 6498 model (6-eater) he had on hand had been sold in their retail store by mistake. But would a 6497 model, exactly the same except for the sub-dial location, be acceptable? I hemmed and hawed and was able to finagle free shipping out of him, before I consented.
OK, the other differences 'twixt the watch in auction and the one on me wrist right now; in short, the dial. Several differences here! First, no globe above the Time World brand. It does have the 'Time World' brand, but it's shifted slightly higher. The main chapter indice is graduated in 1 minute intervals, instead of 1/5th minutes, as pictured. Also the font of the hour numerators is different, being a sans serif. And no double red hash-mark at 12. Indeed, all the hour indices are shaped differently (triangular in shape).
The kicker, though, is the "MADE IN ITALY" below the 6. Italy? This seller listed an address in Dornach, Switzerland! Why is a swiss company selling Italian made watches?!
The back of the watch does indeed look exactly as pictured..
..with the movement being marked "SWISS" and "SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS". I don't see any other makers mark, though I haven't had a chance to inspect it with a loupe, as yet. Is it genuine? Y'all tell me! Should there be and/or branding on the movement itself? It's certainly a nice looking movement. Other nice touches are the strap, which is of high quality, and the seller included a very nice padded leather single-watch carry pouch.
Indeed, the watch is darned impressive overall, with very good fit & finish, and a quality feel. So.. I dunno. The watch does still meet all my prime criteria I was lookin' for. And I love that stepped & knurled -style crown! So why am I on the fence? Well.. obviously for the fact that watch was not exactly as pictured in the auction, 9-eater vs. 6-eater aside.
I dunno, I dunno. Overall I'm quite happy with it. If I were sure about the origin of the movement, IOW that it is indeed , I'd feel a lot better...

..and there's no doubt, 'tis a legit 6497. Underneath the balance wheel it's stamped with the logo and "6497-1".
So I'm headin' off to shoot some s. I'll leave you with a shot I took yesterday.
Same Poor Man's Beer, different watch..
This shot is very accurate in depicting the color balance of the Balmer's dial and the strap. See, it ain't THAT -worthy! Or is it? Oh welL!
I shall return!

..which IS a relief! Couldn't handle a in me Italian-made watch!
-Ricky
However, it was certainly implied! All e-mails from the seller (and we're talking a half-dozen or so, between the 6498-to-6497 swap, and negotiating the free shipping) had his address prominently listed as "Unterer Zielweg 1, Dornach, SO 4143, Switzerland". So I was never expecting German-built.. but I did expect !
Heck, he even lists a phone number, so I maybe I should call and ask him WASSUP!
} It sure is not the same watch
} that you bought, or really even
} 75% of the same watch.
You think? I'd say it was about 90% the same! I mean, I agreed to the 6497 to 6497 swap beforehand, remember. So the only difference is the dial, really.
