Introducing the Sheffield Allsport 100M.

I make no secret of the fact that divers aren't my favorite genre, but something about this 17-jewel handwind spoke to me. Perhaps because the classic looks, for me, epitomizes the genre. Perhaps the low, low price (roughly the cost of dinner at a decent Family Restaurant). Perhaps because the condition made it obvious that it was in dire need of some TLC from a patient Caveman Watchmaker. Laughing!

Yes, of course I field-stripped it and gave it a thorough Tom Swift Cleaning. Wink, wink ...

It was shockingly dirty, but cleaned up quite nice..

..if I do say so meself. I am smiling...

Nicely executed screwdown caseback..

..and 'twas a lucky thing that I stripped it before washing it, because the caseback gasket was broken in three places. Scary! I've fitted a new one, though, as well as lubing the crown gasket with silicone juice, so I actually wouldn't be afraid to get this one wet, vintage or no.

Quite a nice Swiss-made Tropic strap, too!

One other powerful attraction was the movement itself. While not decorated or particularly slick-looking, it is nevertheless handsome in a journeymanlike way. The makers hallmark is "RL" inside a hollow 6-sided star, and it's also marked "CAL 1015P SWISS UNADJUSTED". Never seen one quite like it, and darned if I can find it in the Ranfft database.. or anywhere else, for that matter. Quite unusual also in that it has an early version of quickset date. It is not a two-click crown, mind! You pull the crown out to set position and rotate it clockwise to set the time, but rotate it counter-clockwise to quick-set the date. Unusual, perhaps, and not quite as effective as a modern 2-click quickset.. but lightyears more convenient than forward-to-3 backwards-to-9 slowset. I am smiling... Thumbs Up!

One other noteworthy feature is the cyclops..

Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..it might not be obvious from the photos, but that's an internal cyclops!

All in all I'm just happier'n a slopped hog with this one. Is Happy Day! WIS honeymoon

But complete disclosure demands that I admit that I'm not telling all about this one. It has one very, very, very unusual aspect that I'm deliberately not mentioning. Wink, wink ... And it's not a hidden feature, but perfectly obvious once you pick up on the clues in the photos. I wonder if y'all can spot it? I am smiling... Anyone care to give it a go? Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off!

T'anks for lookin, dear Constant Reader!

now you need a vintage Vostok Amphibian to see why they were superier to Swiss divers in those days
Very Nice! (n/t) (Views: 13)

I'm glad I couldn't make out the Ronda makers mark in the original movement phots, 'cause these are about 256% better. Laughing!

Again, nothing exceptional, just journeyman Post about a Swiss watch or movement workmanship at its vintage norm. Which ain't bad, BTW! Wink, wink ...

A closer Super-Macro look at the relavant bits...

Good, solid work, that. WIS honeymoon

And I just know ye've all been waiting for a Wrist Shot. The fact that I didn't post one from the git-go was probably the best clue as to this li'l guys true size, no? I am smiling... So, without further ado, here 'tis overstrapped..

..on the 18mm Ricky Standard NATO.

The fact that is overstrapped wi' an 18mm would have surely let the cat out of the bag, no? Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off!

Just showed her the Wrist Shot, and she commented "Ricky, you've got to admit that's like strapping a 2-horse trolling motor on a 28-foot Ski Boat." Laughing!

See why I love this woman? Wink, wink ...

Thumbs Up! It's a beauty Ricky. Well done. 'love the square cyclops and the band is great as well! (n/t) (Views: 12)

I had the exact same Sheffield with the same rubber strap a while back! I gave it to a work friend who's Seiko dress watch had died.
He promptly left in at a bar here in Austin about 3 months later. Hmm. Were you on 6th street in Austin back in March? Joking. Nice watch though.

Could it be? (Views: 17)

Maybe 'tis no joke after all! I am confused...

This is an eFlay watch, and came from Sun City, AZ. Now, I realize that Austin and Sun City aren't exactly neighboring locales.. but they're both on I-10 and a mere ~ one days drive apart! Given that these watches aren't what you'd call thick on the ground, it doesn't seem beyond the realm of possibility that this is the same exact watch. How crazy would that be?! Crazy, man! Scary! To assuage my curious nature.. do you know if it's the same movement? IOW a Ronda 1015P?

TIA!

..but that's OK, as my original movement photos sucked so bad I couldn't make it out. I am sad... This gave me an excuse to shoot some more. Laughing!

Anyway.. yeah, it's a seven-sided star, so definitely a Ronda!

You said "very, very, VERY unusual". Small size or a fixed bezel just wouldn't merit that kind of description. And I don't see anything else. I'll probably kick myself when you tell us what it is!

Ahh.. Oops! My goof! perhaps not the best choice of phrases to describe its diminutive size.

OTOH, how many sub-32mm watches of that style do you see? Right! Not many! Wink, wink ...

I'll tell you what I think of it: Lovely! Congrats Mr Mc Broom! I am smiling ... (Views: 16)

I always had a weak spot for these kind of old 60's/70's divers;mostly when found they are significantly worn, damaged etc... But man yours looks so healthy! Thumbs Up! Your clean up did a good job as it reveals nothing but beauty! I am smiling ...

Oh to answer regarding your hint > (Views: 17)
Bock -- June 06, 2009 09:20PM
is it the size perhaps? I am confused... The crown looks relatively big to the rest of the watch I am smiling ...

Ricky Lee -- June 06, 2009 09:54PM
Good eye! That's what I thought would give it away! 'tis basically a 3/4 scale watch with a full-sized crown. I am smiling... So imagine my surprise when thebarak keyed on the springbars to suss me out. Wink, wink ...

Also, the size of the movement spacer ring relative to the case is a pretty good clue. This movement absolutely fills the case, and if it were a normal-sized gents watch, the movement would be pocketwatch-sized. I am smiling...

-Ricky

I think I know the secret (Views: 23)
thebarak -- June 06, 2009 09:11PM
Based on the spring bars I'll guess it's a boy's sized watch around 32mm

Am I right?

DING DING DING! You got it, mate! I am smiling... Post contains photos (Views: 27)
Ricky Lee -- June 06, 2009 09:37PM
It is indeed a "boy-sized" watch, with a base diameter of 31.8mm by my calipers. Takes a 16mm strap, and is prominetly marked as such;

Took a little photoshopping, lest I spill the beans. Laughing!

Oh, and thanks for not saying that it's a Ladies Watch Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off! which is, I suspect, how it was marketed.

Buy, hey, that's OK, as I am a notorious cross-dresser, with several ladies watches in me wardrobe. They go great wi'..

Does it have something to do with the "T Swiss Made M1" on the lower part of the dial?

While one assumes T is [Tritium?...well, the type of Lume used] I've got to day I'm stumped byt the M1 reference.
Early '80s BMW supercar is what I'm thinking... but surely, that can't be it?

So what gives?

Ricky Lee -- June 06, 2009 10:04PM
You got me there, I'm afraid. I am smiling...

Just conjecture, but it might be a date mark, similar to the Bulova dating scheme. 1971 would seem to be about right, and 1961 not out of the question.
