Yikes. Get rid of that Chrysler!
It's never-ending with them.

How about another trusty Mazda? or Honda?

I like the watch, and maybe this doesn't matter to you, but maybe the fact that the hands are fat enough to pretty seriously obstruct the chrono dials is enough to bring your inner Scotsman into action?

SuperPoos are popular in Canada
(just teasing a bit)

My dad had an Impreza wagon. Not a terrible car, overall. But it did have constant brake and bearing problems, so make sure you have those checked if you buy used.

If you're thinking about new, there is a new model SUV that a coworker of mine just ordered, which has a fancy new GDI engine and gets mid-30 mpg fuel economy. I think the Imprezas get ~25 mpg?

It's worth considering, if you keep cars for 10+ years. 10 years from now, gas might be $10 a gallon.

Let's see what we pay now... About $ 2.20 per liter, almost $ 8.34 a gallon now, Largest part is tax though...

Well.. perhaps the prudent thing. Supposedly it's based on some class of Fiat platform, and that alone makes me a wee bit nervous, I admit. Laughing Out Loud!

Still, it's an excellent handling, solid-feeling car, and very well equipped even at the base level.

For example, I seriously looked at an Odyssey for Miss Pam's new ride. I wanted to buy it, really. I did like it.

Let me give you a little insight into the American mentality. Some families, when they have their 2nd kid, get a minivan. Like my sister's family, who has a Toyota Sienna. This way. They can bring themselves, their two kids, all of the kids' crap, AND pick up a couple friends!

Most of the time, it is just them and the two kids, and they don't have to pack carefully; just throw it in the back. Also, the middle row of seats are nice and high, so that the baby seats end up at a height that doesn't require them to bend over to put the kids in and out. The doors open and close with a push button, and so does the back hatch. Lastly, lots of women here feel "safer" if they sit up a little higher. They don't feel bullied on the road by the SUVs and trucks (lorries). If someone tailgates them because they are going slow, they don't care, because they feel safer in their bigger car.

Guys tend not to like them, but a practical man will grudgingly admit how darned useful they can be. I have a friend who decided in favor of the Sienna (instead of the Oddyssey) because a 4x8 sheet of drywall or plywood would fit flat in the back. No more tying stuff to the roof. There's a lot to like about them, even if they aren't fun to drive or fuel efficient. If gas in The Netherlands was only $3.45 a gallon, I bet these would be all over YOUR country too. winking smiley

I traded MY Mazda MX-5 for a manual transmission Accord EX (with the 2.4 L, 190 hp engine) when the baby came in March. The Accord is about 80% as fun to drive, more fuel efficient, runs on cheaper fuel, has a nice roomy interior and a good sized trunk. I refuse to get a minivan. I'd rather pack carefully and just have 2 kids or less. On those rare occasions when friends want to be with me AND the kid, and we can't fit in the Accord, then they can bloody well drive their own car. winking smiley

One type of car that seems to have been forgotten in the US is the station wagon. We have some small hatchback cars, like the Toyota Matrix and Mazda 3, but no longer station wagons any more. It is either hatchback, sedan, minivan, coupe, or SUV. Some of the newer SUVs are getting so small now that they are effectively station wagons. Kate's Nissan Rogue, for instance, gets 25-27 mpg but still has AWD.

One last thing to consider. We have a LOT of miles of road here. Many of which are in the midwest, great plains, and desert. No curves for miles, and no hills. Most of our driving is not the fun type, so a sportier car's talents would be wasted, and the practicality of a minivan would be missed more often.

I'm with you though. I'll take sporty and fun to drive with ENOUGH room, over big and roomy any day.

Here's my Photobucket album containing pix of the two of them.
Smaug 12 December 02, 2012 07:56AM
Maybe you missed that I KNOW a bit about the American lifestyle...
..being married to my wife Paula from South Bend IN, since 20 years. Visited about 11 times since I met her, have been driving quite a lot in the States (see my profile on pmwf), also drove a Dodge Grand Caravan and the older model too, plus a variety of sizes in rentals. My wife has 5 siblings plus many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends in the States, we visited them ALL, many regularly. Last 2 years due to my unemployment no money for traveling over the big pond though, unfortunately. Of course, one SELDOM see any of the family on this side (short on time and/or short on money too)

Yes, I always wondered what happened to modern Station Wagons in general and in the USA particularly. Mine is even a "aerodeck", a small stationcar model on the base of a Civic sedan. But Honda only makes a EU Accord as "Tourer". As you may know, the EU Accord is based upon the Japanese model, the US Accord is different. Still the model is around in the States as a certain Acura. Here some pictures of the Euro Accord Tourer and the "normal" version

I am for environment friendliness, but with long distances many ppl do need big polluting cars but many more can do with a smaller engine due to little if ever intercity driving.

I see here many ppl with their SUVs, women driving their kids a couple of miles or going to the mall and it is irresponsible and ostentatious IMO

Never been to Israel, but it's not that big... If you look here: [mapfight.appspot.com] It' even smaller then mine. You don't need large cars, with a small family. With a large family which you haul everyday, that is a different thing. Also driving around large distances, like in the States you love to do that in a BIG car indeed, as comfortable as possible, CC and A/C on and there you go..... In the van I mentioned I rented, I had a satellite radio, so all over the country you could listen to the same station, that was great.

When there's a solid market for a certain thing, even something as arcane as a used British MoD-Issued Japanese Chronograph, a goodly number of them change hands.

Every time one change hands, the going price works to set a precedent. Add them all up, and a concrete market value is established.

Consigliere, I to wish for a Solar. The one with GPS. But I guess I'll grow old waiting for the price to get close to my budgetsmoking smiley (n/t) jackrobinson 13 December 03, 2012 09:32AM

Maybe it's a payment/purchase link from PayPal
Almost certainly. That's not uncommon with smaller sellers and, since the direct link to PayPal is a fail for you, that's probably the only practical solution. Tell him to send it on! thumbs up

Btw: how good are lotus watches?
Ahhhh... Lorus you mean, right?

They're OK. Very much "built to a price", if you know what I mean. Even more so than Pulsar. Base metal cases almost exclusively, for instance. But as Seiko's entry-level brand, to be expected. They use Seiko Group movements, so no worries there!

What do you know about the pulsar kinetic - any good compared with seiko?

Identical to a Seiko, movement-wise.

Mind you I'm no fan of the technology. Nor am I alone in that. winking smiley

If you own one watch, a Kinetic is fine. Great, even! But if you're a collector with many watches in rotation, in my experience a Kinetic will bring heartache and sorrow. thumbs down

Thanks for all of that
I am not hot for a kinetic. It is my watchmaker. I now sent him the link for rubicon and we were talking on the phone and I could virtually hear him drooling over the kinetics.

nice looking watch!
It seems like even though the Pulsar is the entry level in Seiko's range, they seem to overcook the details a bit less often.

How much?

I DID forget Lorus!
I never DID know they were owned by Seiko.

Re: I never DID know they were owned by Seiko.
You're not alone. Many WIS forget Lorus, it seems, even if they do know they're a division of Seiko.

What's really overlooked amongst WIS In General is that there's a Citizen brand ( Q & Q Watch Co. ) which is exactly analogous to Lorus with respect to marketing position. Q&Q is not sold in the US Market, mind (at least not officially), so perhaps that has something to do with it. But AFAIK they're in every other world market, so still a bit strange...

As far as I can tell Citizen has no analog of Pulsar, though. I.e. a "mid-tier" brand. Always found that interesting...

Re: I never DID know they were owned by Seiko.
Q & Q Watch Co. is also pretty inexpensive, cheaper in general than Lorus Watch Co. even....

Remember the shop with those brothers est.1929?
Almost all the watches in their store are Q&Q. I thought the brand was rubbish due to the large logo and so-so cheap Chinese sort of look. This is interesting information coming my way.
jackrobinson 11 December 03, 2012 09:39AM
Well. No way is Q&Q top-line gear. But it ain't rubbish, either!
Rock-solid movements, if nothing else. thumbs up

Despite the Captain's detailed and erudite analysis winking smiley I'd put Q&Q exactly on a par with Lorus.Laughing Out Loud!

Now, do the same for Citizen Watch Group, and I think you'll notice a markedly different trend.

Well, I was sent to Citizen's brand - independent watches. Now there are things to see there

Nice watches there at independent
And nice to know I've made some positive impact. 'Specially (this is me moaning) after how jinxed this week started. Bad luck one after another that the only thing left to do is smile and admit there is a mojohot smiley on me and just expect the worst. I should've been on holiday this week or maybe preferably stayed in bed, I tellya.smoking smiley

But you know, browsing from my high phone from work (no accessible wired or wireless LAN where I am at) I had a couple o laughs today induced by JFK, Smaug, Consigliere and yourself and lots of pleasant brain stretching and interesting discussions and discoveries plus I am about to pull the trigger on the Pulsar chrono which is satisfaction in itself - purchase rush. So there, I've cheered myself up.
