Watch review: Nautica N16530G Chronograph

Having lived with the Nautica Watch Co. for a week now, I feel like I can approach a review with some objectivity. Mind you, I freely admit I'm still head-over-heels WIS Honeymoon with it, so take that with a grain of salt! Laughing Out Loud!

Of course I provided an "Incoming Alert" and an "IHD Report", though there was precious little detail. Still, there are a couple of bits worth quoting, so I don't have to Reinvent The Wheel.

..I am most favorably impressed. Partly this is due merely to the condition of the watch, mind. The seller was one of those conservative types who said "VGC, but a few scuffs and scratches from normal wear". In fact, the darned thing is pretty much perfect! thumbs up There are a few flaws, but I had to look long and hard (with a loupe!) to find them. Pin me down, and I'd give a TZ 98% rating...
I stand behind that, and also the statement that "This may be the best 50-something-bucks I ever spent!" For the money, this is a killer watch, and no two ways about it! cool smiley

OK! A photo!

I've long been enamored of watches that use wee flags as chapter markers, especially if they're nautical flags. And if they're on the bezel, that's OK too. winking smiley

Why? Darned good question! confused smiley I've been on a sailboat precisely twice in me life, so it's not like I have any sort of practical interest in the feature. Crazy! Loco! In the end, I reckon it's just a CooL cool smiley design element in and of itself, one which I find visually harmonious.

Then, too, I think that this watch manages to perfectly distill the the 'Brand Aura' that Nautica strives for into the metal proper. They must think so, too..

..since the design has been featured prominently in their ads. smiling smiley

And while I know that some will consider it "a Corum homage", IMHO that overlooks the fact that has long aimed for the same target audience. To me, it stands on it's own, without being an homage at all.

OK! Let's get to the nuts-n-bolts!

The case is all SS, measuring 49.5mm X 58.5mm X 14.5mm thick, with 22mm lugs. If you measure with the crown it's a whopping 54.5mm, so it is indeed a substantially-sized watch. The crown and caseback are screwdowns, and the bezel a 60-click unidirectional rotating.

The action of the crown is a marvel. thumbs up Butter smooth thread engagement, plenty of it, and the slightly-oversize dimensions strike me as spot-on, offering plenty of purchase for the fingers. Also, I find the angle-milled V-notches to be a welcome departure from the more pedestrian knurling you commonly see.

Likewise the action of the chrono pushers is tip-top. Pushers that offer no tactile feedback are a pet peeve of mine, so I was glad to find that these provide a substantial "click" when activated. The red anodized finish of the reset pusher is a cherry that tops it all.
thumbs up

The bezel action.. well, less than ideal. Oops! My mistake! It operates quite smoothly, mind, if a smidgen on the stiff side. But the polished finish, small notches, and inset design offer less than optimum purchase for the fingers. Whistling... It's not bad, really, at least under most conditions. I.e. as long as your fingers are dry. But with wet fingers? Or with gloves on? Fuhgeddaboutit! thumbs down

The crystal is a gently-domed mineral glass unit, 37mm in diameter, and seems plenty thick. From certain angles there appears to be an internal anti-reflective coating. From other angles.. well, I'm not certain. confused smiley I can say for sure that the crystal is not at all prone to glare and stray reflections, a rarity for domed glass. Odds are there is a coating, and 'tis simply a subtle one. And, after all, a good AR Coating shouldn't call attention to itself, so well-done Nautica.
Applause!

Nicely decorated solid caseback, very simple yet impeccably executed. And the fit of the curved-end strap is a wonder, showing very impressive attention to detail.

I know I said I was going to wait 'til it needed a battery before I opened it up, but in the end my curiosity got the better of me. (Curiosity may have killed that cat, but it'll never get me! Laughing Out Loud!) As I suspected from the layout and the "JAPANESE MOVEMENT" verbiage, it's a OS20.

A solid, stalwart movement the OS20, I couldn't be happier with Nautica's choice. thumbs up

As a bonus, I can also report that the action of the caseback is right up there with the crown. Butter smooth thread engagement, plenty of it, and an adequate if not exceptional O-ring seal. I have no doubt whatsoever that the 100M WR rating is justified and, in fact, I reckon it may well be conservative.

The caseback is stamped "CALLANEN INTERNATIONAL CHINA CASE D" on the inside, with "86" rubber-stamped in ink.

Very nice buckle, though the "screws" you see there are purely decorative. In fact the buckle is affixed to the strap with a conventional springbar.

The strap itself is mildly disappointing in that, while the molded fabric construction is very similar to Banda Polo Flamen® straps, it totally lacks the subtle "stretchy" feel of a Banda. Still, it's very well made, fits perfectly and, more importantly..

..is actually long enough to fit me ankle-sized wrist. WooHOO! Applause!

I have since installed a double-pushbutton release butterfly deployant because.. well, because I use deployants on my leather straps pretty much exclusively. Whistling... Here's a QnD photo I just shot with the iPhone..

Sorry about the poor quality. I am blushing Note that I moved the sliding keeper in front of the fixed keeper, a trick us ankle-wristed fellows use a lot. winking smiley

OK. Lessee.. have I left anything out? {Consults Bro' Smaug's Handy-Dandy Review Checklist} Ah! A Lume Report.

I got to say.. luminosity is not an area where this watch excels. Only the tips of the hands are lumed, there's none on the dial whatsoever. Still, what there is of it pops pretty good, and remains readable for 5 to 6 hours. But the multi-beamed semi-skeleton hands are very pretty, and rightly sized in length, so I can forgive this slight shortcoming.

Alright. Think I've covered it all. Only other thing I'll say is..

The blue-dial version IS very nice! thumbs up
If I'd had my druthers, I just might have went with that model, too.

But the price on this gently-used example was just too good to pass up! Laughing Out Loud!

You know, it's funny. Although it's an absolute behemoth by conventional standards, this watch really doesn't seem to "wear" large at all. Crazy! Loco!

Maybe I been hangin' 'round with Bro. JY too much. Whistling...

In my experience that's probably because it has a fairly flat case - my 53mm Ritmo and Tendence watches have the same feel: big size but flat cases and wear small.

Oi, you say that like it may be a bad thing! winking smiley
