MP3 Watch mini-, or A totally new kind of Ana-Digi.. >>
Yes, the timekeeping is strictly analog.. but you get 256 megabytes of digital audio on your wrist!
Here are the seller's pics:
And his specs:
The watch is 48mm across the crown, and 52mm across the lugs. Kinda sorta. There's a molded resin cover over the actual watch case, and my measurements reflect that. I'd like to know what it looks like under that cover, in fact.. but not quite enough to go tearing into my new toy. :-) Not just yet. I'm pretty sure I'd be disappointed, anyway. But it looks fine as-is, in a trendy G-Shock kinda way. My main problem with rubber watches is that they're dust magnets, and this'n is no exception. Ah well, that's why we have camel-hair brushes, right?
The resin strap is a good match. Quite a long strap it is, too - it fits my 8-1/8" wrist on the 3rd hole. I could do without the 'Power' and 'USB' logos on the strap, mind. For that matter I wouldn't miss the 'MP3' and 'REC' labels at 12 and 6. The simple 'Mp3 Watch' on the dial is plenty, I think. Hmmm. Maybe I'll get another one for a project. Totally stealth that puppy.
The MP3 interface is basic (no display), but is functional and intuitive. Lucky thing, too, as the so-called Instruction Manual is one of the most garbled *-English translations I've ever seen. The sound quality is fine; like any other MP3 player, it depends mostly on what bitrate you choose to encode your audio files. My main reservation - that the 5 MW output would not offer the volume levels the I sometimes like - proved groundless. It actually cranks pretty durned good! I'll never use anything near max volume on any but a select few fav rockers.
And yes, the unit can record: there's a built-in microphone under the dustcover on the RH side. It records in 64 KB/sec MP3 and that is, apparently, fixed by default, and is not adjustable. The quality of the recorded sound is just OK, even considering the low bitrate. This built-in mic is simply not of audiophile quaility. It'll do fine for voice, mind you. Too bad it doesn't sound as good as my iRiver H-140, though - it'd be a concert-bootleggers dream!
You can also use the unit as a flash drive, of course. Just plug it into the USB port of your PC or Mac and away you go. Very handy!
The seller was fine, offering good comm, including a tracking number, and the shipping was lightning fast (4 days from Hong Kong to Memphis, TN, USA). All in all, I'm very pleased with it. If you need an MP3 player, or a flash drive, you could do worse. Heck, the price is competitive with dedicated MP3 players of similar spec, so it's sort of like getting a free watch. And if, like me, you're attracted mostly by it's 'Gee Whiz' aspect, you'll love this thing!
