Dunno what posessed me.. well, actually I do. Me Inner Scotsman could not resist the < $30 (less than a modest dinner for two ! ) Buy-It-Now price..
Ennyway, 'ere ya' go;
25-jewel bumper automatic ca. 1974Now the wait begins. Ah, well, 'tis only comin' from London. 'tis a mere ocean away.
The watch was described as "runs strong as an ox, keeps excellent time, cosmetically 85%".. how could I possibly resist such an ad? If it's half that good, I figure that I did OK considering the price I paid.
What say y'all? Did I do good, or no?

is probably an ETA 2824, though older Enicars used Racine "AR" movements (Enicar = Racine spelled backwards).

Nice score, it looks real good with that band.
Why is everyone so worried about the hammer? After all, if that handy claw wasn't on the hammer, how else would the seller be able to remove the back case....?

It's really not. It's listed as 37.5mm and a quick check of My Usual Sources says that it's a 38mm watch. Soooo.. yeah, I know some think 38mm is a bit petite.. Meself, I say it's The Perfect Size For A Watch.

The good news is, this watch is definitely an honest 85 percenter!
There's some wabi on the case, sure. But that's only to be expected of a 70's vintage watch. Much to my relief the movement's a solid fit in the case, it handwinds smoothly and easily (you had me scared there! ), and the crystal and dial are pretty much perfect;
Stands up to a closeup, anyway.
More wabi on the sides of the case, but the signed crown is still crisp..
..though you can't tell by that out-of-focus ..
Likewise the case back, while there are some scuffs and scratches, is still crisp..
..don't look like it's ever been polished at all.
So the real good news/bad news, I guess, is that I got a great deal and you got screwed..
Sorry.. I don't really think you got screwed. As you say, your will make a good project. But I do feel bad that yours was not as good as it should've been.
Soooo.. back to the bad news on my part, the strap. 'tis a pretty good strap, actually, a Taikonaut. It obviously comes by it's aged look honestly, and if it fit me I'd love it. But it don't even come close to fitting my fat wrist, and if you want it, it's yours. Seems like the least I can do. And if I didn't offer, I wouldn't feel right about ing with this one...
me if you want it...

You and me both!
Alas, short of robbing a strap off another watch, that Bond's the only means I had of gettin' the watch on me wrist.
I am kind of disappointed that the Taikonaut strap is too short for me. It's got a lovely distressed 'patina' that goes perfectly with the watch, IMO, yet it's still very solid and wearable. Ah well, that's what I get for havin' fat wrists..
Also mildly disappointed to find that the 's lugs are 19mm. I'd prefer 18 or 20, as my alternatives for straps would be much wider. I s'pose I'll end up squeezing a 20mm black one on...

Date: Monday, 29 January 2007, at 2:16 a.m.The photos I posted yesterday sucked, plain and simple. The light just wasn't right (very grey and overcast, drizzling rain). So I decided to give it another try today. I was able to improve on them marginally, I think, but I'm still not satisfied. Out of 50+ pics, these are a couple of the better ones;
Click photos to supersize.
At least the color balance is much more accurate...
Part of my frustration, I think, is that the watches flaws are so evident in photos.
It really looks good on the wrist. Shoot, it looks great to the naked eye! But the camera captures every single microscopic flaw. This is especially evident in this shot;
I mean, you'd think the watch was just trashed, judging by that photo.
Ah well, it's how it appears on the wrist that really matters and, in that regard, I'm loving it!

Heck, just shooting the watch inside a white trashbag will diffuse a lot of light. It's the directness of the light that causes all those flaws to stand out. A transluscent tupperware container, about 18" by 18" by 12" should be ideal as a PLB. Take a hole saw and buzz a little porthole in the side for your camera to peek through and see if you don't get better results. Or, you could keep beating your head against the wall using the same ol' techniques you've been using...
Cheers, Jeff
- Funny, I just bought a second light tent off ebay yesterday. (views: 22)
Chris L -- Monday, 29 January 2007, at 2:58 a.m.
Picked up a 12"x12"x12" for $20 ($10 + $10 shipping) from the same seller that I got my 24" model from last summer. I think buying my tent last summer and using better artificial lights has improved my pics a lot.
I hope to have some better, closer angles with this new one. The 24" model I have now is really much too big for single watch portraits. Does work nice with group shots though.
