Is Happy Day! Scratching an itch with a vintage veteran

November 18, 2011 06:24PM

While this watch was described as "a restoration", I'll say up front that it is (obviously!) anything but. Frankly, the cosmetic condition is.. well, "rough" Eek! is the only way to put it. What qualified it as "a restoration" to the seller was a new crystal and a fresh COA service on the movement. Both are worthy selling points, and when it became apparent that the watch could be had for less than half what I'm accustomed to paying for a movement servicing alone, I just couldn't resist.

The specific itch it scratched?

You called it a few days ago, Bro. dano0..

It's my first . Smile

But wait! There's more! It actually scratches another itch in that..

..it allows me to add France to the collection as a new Country Of Origin. WooHoo!

Base metal bezel with SS caseback, 33mm X 40mm X 10mm thick, with 16mm lugs. It came on a brand-new medium-brown padded leather strap which, while a Long, was still just shy of fitting me. Thumbs down Ah well, it's not like I'm not used to it. Wink Anyway, the only 16mm XL straps I own were already in use, hence you see it "over-strapped" here with an 18mm nylon.

I'm pretty darned sure that crown ain't original, and's rougher'n a cob. But the case is in quite decent condition, actually. There's very little brassing, though..

..some corrosion is evident on the back of the lugs. Screwdown caseback, which..

..also indicates "FRANCE" on the inside.

On to the powerplant!

An Elgin caliber 723, a 17-jewel handwinder of 10.5 ligne. Some scratches, obviously, and the screw heads have been boogered up a bit. But overall it's quite clean, with no evident corrosion.

Beyond that, it's a bit of a mystery. There's no Elgin caliber 723 in the Rafft database, and I'm thinking it's probably not an in-house Elgin movement. There's some evidence on the NAWCC site suggesting it's a re-branded A.Schild. However, Ranfft doesn't list an AS 723, either. There is an AS caliber 1723 listed, and this is a pretty close match, being a 10.5 ligne 17J with sub-seconds, and of the same era (ca. 1955). But the bridges are subtly different, so I dunno...

One thing I can say for sure - it runs sweet! Cool Too soon to call the accuracy, but in the ~ 3 hours I've been observing it's fine 'n' dandy. Thumbs up!

And..

..it wears Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr8! WIS Honeymoon Laughing

Yes, the "patina" is a bit more than I am generally comfortable with. But with a freshly-serviced movement at under US $50 shipped, it can't be all bad, right? Wink Add in the fact that it allows me to cross "Elgin" off one List and add "France" to another and.. well, all in all, I'm pretty darned happy with it!

Thanks for readin' y'all...

Cheers!

-Ricky

Still wearing it, and it's really growing on me.
Thank you!

Ricky Lee 64 November 20, 2011 08:11AM

I wouldn't do a thing to it...
...I used to avoid watches with "too much" patina or "wabbi" but I've come around and now believe that one should embrace vintage watches as they are, the've been around and have the War wounds to prove it. A vintage watch is not just a watch like any other, they are veterans with a story to tell and part of the story is the signs of age that they accumulate. A proper vintage should have at least some signs of age, even if just mild patina. Your Elgin has a alot of "character" and probably many stories to tell if it could talk, enjoy it just as it is and congratulations on your latest buy.

Paul J Costa 76 November 19, 2011 09:23AM

Well said! Clapping! I do aspire to your philosophy, just as you state it.
And, on the whole, I believe I'm quite tolerant of a spot of wabi.

That being said, it can get to a point where I just can't hang with it. This Elgin is not quite at that place.. but you can see it from there. Laughing

I'm sure it does.

Mind you, I reckon one story might be how it sat in someone's Junk Drawer sans crystal for a good long period of time. Wink

To the naked eye, it's nowhere near the train wreck that it appears in hi-res photos.

More, as you say, a Pleasing Patina. Thumbs up!

Very nice score there Ricky!!! Congrats!!!! I love those older sportsmens....
Believe it or not, you may be able to find a dial for her if the Patina bothers you that much. The funny thing with these older Elgins is that parts are seemingly readily available, but, much searching is required!!! Congrats....she's a beauty!!!!

Re: Believe it or not, you may be able to find a dial for her if the Patina bothers you that much.
Ah, I can live with it.

It is on the fringes of what I find to be acceptable, though, so I'll certainly be on the lookout for a good dial. You never know! Wink

Bestfit says Elgin 723 = Jeambrun PS32 (n/t)

bjohnson 147 November 18, 2011 06:44PM

Yup, that's it alright! Thumbs up! URL
Ranfft does show the Jeambrun PS32 and it looks like an exact match to me.

At first I thought it must actually be the PS31, but I just double-checked and, sure enough I mis-measured the movement diameter. Oops! It is indeed 11.5 ligne, not 10.5.

Note to self: "Next time remove the spacer ring before you measure a movement, ya big dummy!" Laughing

Thank you! mate, I owe ya one...

Ricky Lee 72 November 18, 2011 07:14PM

I think I agree that it's a Swiss movement. Jpeg Attachments
Really to my mind, a French-made Elgin is like a 1970's AMF Harley-Davidson. Just not quite "genuine".

Here's what an American-made movement would look like.

Chris L 119 November 18, 2011 06:36PM

A more apt comparison would be an Aermacchi Harley-Davidson, made in Italy.Cool (n/t)

itschris 81 November 18, 2011 10:09PM

It would at that. BTW, an Aermacchi-HD was my very first motorbike, at age 10. Smile Jpeg Attachments URL

More HERE.

I've also owned a couple of 350 Sprints...

Ricky Lee 73 November 19, 2011 09:20AM

Movement's French too, it turns out. Haven't been able to turn up a lot on Jeambrun.. URL
But I did find this bit on The Metatechnical Cabinet:

Quote
Christoph Lorenz
The Jeambrun..originates from France, from the village of Maîche of the departement Doubs near the northwest swiss border.
I'm actually pretty happy that my French-American watch is all French.. Laughing

Re: Really to my mind, a French-made Elgin is like a 1970's AMF Harley-Davidson. Just not quite "genuine".
Got to agree.

You know, American watch companies were the vanguard of "off-shoring", when you think about it. A dubious distinction, I admit...
