Bro. Marc gave me a head-up last week, saying that I had a package inbound. Part of his late father's estate, "mainly ultra cheap fashion pieces with a couple of surprises thrown in". Still, I wasn't prepared for a 13 x 11 Priority Mail box with about 4 kilograms of watches inside! Eek!

I got to say, "mainly ultra cheap fashion pieces" or no, several that I'm sure Marc counts in that class definitely appeal to me. Wink Right now I'm wearing the Croton CX2, for instance (wonder of wonders the leather strap fits me!), and it's got a sort of Torgoen look that I've always admired. Plus, it's the first watch I've ever seen with a compass actually embedded in the dial!

Sure, I looked for a stock photo, and found it:

Stock photo

What really amazed me is where I found it - the TimeZone Sales Corner!

A Genuine TZ Watch? I have now officially Arrived as a Discerning Collector! Laughing

But, don't worry me Brothers, I won't go all Snob on ye. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

A proper Is Happy Day! post will have to wait for the weekend, I fear, but rest assured it'll happen.

Though I never knew your father, Marc, I feel certain that he was a Fine Man, to have produced a son like yourself. "The acorn doesn't fall far from the tree", the Irish say, and I sincerely believe it.

Thank you from the bottom of me heart Bro. Marc, and I do hope spreading these watches around has helped you find solace and closure after the passing of your father. It's perhaps the most poignant and moving gesture I've ever witnessed.

Warmest regards,

-Ricky

P.s. - and the "surprises"? Don't get me started! Wink

Live long and prosper.

Watch or Accessory Review : Croton CX2

May 21, 2011 06:09PM

Sure, you had a sneak peek at this one a few days ago. I decided I could do better than that "stock" photo, though, so here goes! Smile

Croton CX2

The silver 'sunbust brushed' dial is quite well done.. check the Mega photo! Wink

Sorry about all the specks and lint.. I totally forgot to dust this one off before I shot the photos. Oops!

Base metal bezel with a SS back, it's a big ol' rascal at 45.7mm X 54.2mm X 13mm, with 22mm lugs. The crystal is mineral of a low-dome design, making it a bit challenging to photograph.

Pity about that reflection.. and a Booby Prize to anyone that can 'guess' the brand name of me tripod! Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

I didn't open it up, but dollars to donuts the engine is either a PC21 or a Miyota 2000-series.

I confess that I could do without the tachy bezel, and the hands are a wee bit short. But this watch has a lot going for it!.The fit & finish is A-OK, the strap is decent.. and it certainly has a commanding presence on the wrist! And, hey! Not every day do you see a compass embedded directly in the dial.. Wink

Big Thumbs up! from me! WIS Honeymoon

Cheers!

-Ricky

"Mechanical watches are so brilliantly unnecessary. Any Swatch or Casio keeps better time, and high-end contemporary Swiss watches are priced like small cars. But mechanical watches partake of what my friend John Clute calls the Tamagotchi Gesture. They're pointless in a peculiarly needful way; they're comforting precisely because they require tending." - William Gibson

Great pictures Ricky, thanks Thumbs Up I have a question about the built-in compass. How reliable >>>
are the readings of it? Being so small in size and surrounded by metal, I wonder how well it could lead you to the North pole

Reto 91 May 22, 2011 12:14AM

Supercool watch! SmileThumbs up! (n/t)

Cool dial, and I really dig the slight dome on the crystal, devil as they are to photograph. Thumbs Up
Oh, and excuse my misplaced Oops! post, below. I am confused

That compass is cool. And a lot simpler that the compass bezel Seiko uses on the Landmonster smile (n/t)

Ed Brandwein 81 May 21, 2011 07:03PM

Thank you! Bro. Ed! Judging by my..

Ricky Lee 82 May 21, 2011 07:20PM

Then it works better than the Landmonster too. Probably for a fraction of the price smile (n/t)

Ed Brandwein 79 May 21, 2011 07:40PM

To be clear: I'd hate to trust me life to it. Eek!
But if the GPS sats were down, I do think it'd be preferable to aiming the Raketa at the sun and adjusting for DST. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

Re: Man..SwitzerlanD!!! THe country of watches!!! URL
Judging by the News Of Late, more like "Switzerland - the country of Suicide Tourism" . Eek!

I reckon I will have no need of that service, however. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

To me, more than watches, Switzerland is "The Country of High-Precision Machine Tools". Smile

And, of course, that's why I'm going. Hopefully, they will live up to my coon-ass redneck expectations. Hopefully for them, as a 3/4M $ US deal is riding on my buy-off. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

I expect a full report...
I'll try. It's gonna be pretty intense, though, so no guarantees.

FWIW, you can find a report of my last trip there.

Contrarian that I am, I may take only Chinese and Japanese watches. Laughing

Though, to be honest, leaving the Mido and the Mondaine behind may prove impossible... Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off
