Well.. not in the short-term. Bro. EdH and I made the trade just last Friday (Ed's own IHD! post is HERE) and, considering the Presidents Day holiday, 'twas actually a lighning-fast deal. Clapping!

However, in the long-term, I've been semi-actively on the lookout for one of these for a couple of years, ever since seeing Bro. Zirlin's example. Sure, 'tis the..

.. 80th Anniversary 300M Diver! WooHOO! WIS Honeymoon

As long as I've been eyeballing this watch, there were still some surprises. First was that it included the original boxes and paperwork. Bro. Ed never mentioned that! I'll spare you photos of the packaging, suffice to say that it consists of a white cardboard outer box, with a round tin inside, both nicely branded with the Craftsman logo.

Second surprise.. this thing is big! Eek! I was expecting something 42mm-ish, but in fact it measures 45.6mm X 53.4mm x 15mm thick, with 24mm lugs. The case is full SS, with screwdown caseback and crown. Quite nicely finished, the sides and bezel are polished, and the face brushed. The crown is a hefty 6.5mm in diameter, operates very smoothly, and is also polished.

The bezel is a 60-click unidirectional, with a nice smooth action, and very little backlash. One minor niggle - while the action is sweet, the sound of the bezel as you rotate it is a bit "tinny". The bezel pip does hit the "12" spang-on, though, with no visible misalignment whatsoever. Alas, the same can't be said of the seconds hand, which misses the markers all the way 'round the dial. This has never been a big deal for me, mind you, so no harm no foul.

The watch arrived with a flat battery but, on the bright side, that gave me the perfect excuse to check out the movement. Smile I didn't take any photos, but I'll show you Esslinger's stock photos of what I found..

..a 2115. Not much to look at, I admit, and I know that many would be disappointed in such a modest powerplant. The bright side, for me, is that it means an inexpensive DIY fix should anything ever go wrong.. Esslinger sells the 2115 for $8.95. Smile Of course, Miyota makes a robust movement so {knocks on wood} I'm not anticipating any problems. This'n took right off upon installation of a fresh 377 cell (SR626SW).

The 2115 is not exactly a small movement, at 10-1/2 ligne (23.3mm).. but it appears tiny inside the yawning chasm of this near-46mm case. Laughing One nice touch results from it, though, as the date window falls inboard of the 3 o'clock marker, rather than "eating" it. Thumbs up!

Moving around to the back..

Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..we find a simple but nicely finished caseback, with the logo repeated. This is also the only indication of the 300M WR rating. The caseback threads in smoothly, and the gasket is plenty robust. IOW, I have no doubt the watch deserves its 300M rating.

The OEM fitment was a resin strap (see HERE), but Bro. Ed added the spiffy OEM bracelet (Croton manufactured this watch for Sears & Roebuck). A very nice touch indeed! Cool

Alas, while the bracelet was close enough..

Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..for me to manage a Hairy Wrist Shot inside!, it's just a wee bit too tight for comfort. I am crying A heartbreaker, kinda, to have it sooo close yet no cigar. 'tis quite a nice bracelet, mind you! Solid links & endlinks and, while the clasp (pushbutton release with safety) is stamped, it's cleanly wrought, and of a heavier gauge than most. So it looks like I'll get a chance to test Croton's customer service. Smile I could get by with one extra link, I reckon, but will probably order two, just to be safe.

By lucky happenstance my vintage 24mm Waterbourne was "between watches", and available for duty. No photos of the combo yet, but you can see the strap on a a couple of different watches HERE and HERE. This is one of my favorite straps, and the Craftsman wears Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr8! with it! Thumbs up!

So, all in all, I couldn't be happier with the watch. It's everything I expected.. and then some! Many thanks to you, Bro. Ed, for making the trade such a pleasure. Clapping!

Cheers!

-Ricky

Cool! Especially if you are a mechanic. (Although I know a lot of them go for Snap-On etc. these days instead of Craftsman, but I am a Craftsman guy).

Great writeup too.

Sharp-looking watch!
Regarding the seconds hand, you could always just remove it...

IMO, it wouldn't suffer a bit, and may even improve. A seconds hand that misses the marks (and badly) is one of my quartz pet peeves. YMMV wink

Smaug 34 February 23, 2011 08:14PM

Re: Regarding the seconds hand, you could always just remove it...
Well.. I don't mind sans seconds on some styles. But, to me, a diver pretty much demands a seconds hand. Even if it is a mere 1 bps. Wink

Luckily I am quite tolerant of this peccadillo, so no such drastic action required. Laughing

However, I've got to say, this one misses about as badly as it is possible to miss. Eek! The seconds hand falls almost exactly halfway between the hash marks. Thing is, it's pretty consistent all the way around the dial. So it should be possible to R & R the seconds hand and cure the problem. Who knows, maybe I'll eventually give it a go. But that's a project for another day!

Ah. Smile I wasn't sure if you noticed the post where I mentioned I kinda sorta planned to take a page from your book. Laughing

Not planning to stop, mind you. But I plan to cut way, way back this year. The goals are two-fold, really..

* Have more outgoing than incoming. Way more.

* Turn a profit on the sideline.

We'll see.. this is the first incoming so far this year. And being a straight-up trade, it don't really count. Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off

jstrap would look on it? Don't recall the width.

JohnnyT 33 February 23, 2011 06:54PM

I never thought of that! Oops! Image Attachments URL
Probably because I am so pleased with it on this Panny homage..

..and also because it would violate my "No divers on leather" rule. Yeah, I know Pannys are technically divers Wink or at least started that way. But I tend to exempt them because there's no Whacking Great Rotating Bezel.

Still.. 'tis really more of a guideline than an actual rule. And the Craftsman Tools is certainly beefy enough so that the Jstrap wouldn't overwhelm it. Hmmmmm.. Laughing

23mm, since it was custom-fit for the Mido chrono. Still, that panhom is a 24mm-lugged watch, of course, and being "under-strapped" by a single millimeter doesn't look bad at all, IMHO.

..aesthetically I'm not sure. Smile

I really do try to avoid leather on a diver, and this is nothing if not. Then, too, this enjoys Most Favored status still - I've worn it every day since it arrived. And I've grown quite accustomed to it on the Waterbourne. So the jury's still out. In the end, the Poll won't be a deciding factor, but it will, perhaps, sway my decision. Please Your vote is required, y'all!

"Rules" be damned! I think it looks great! Thumbs up!
Craftsman plus baseball? The only way that could get more all-American is if you wear it while eating apple pie!

SmileThats better, the photos show on my work PC.....
I like the strap and the watch but they just don't make a match IMO. Both being on the busy side it's just too much going on visually. I liked the Waterbourne combo best. I think a busy strap matches best with a simple bezel. Cheers!

Wow, almost exactly how I feel about this combo!

BobbyMike 6 March 07, 2011 01:13PM

Doesn't look right to me, Ricky.
The watch is so clean and contrasty. Black, white, red. The fatigued medium brown just doesn't go, IMO.

Dark brown might be better.

Black would be better. Maybe even a more glossy black.

Smaug 14 March 06, 2011 10:56PM

No problems with leather on a diver, not sure about the color though
I'll freely admit that I'm probably one of the few that thinks this way, but I've never cared for black dialed watches with brown straps. I love leather straps, probably more than bracelets. I've done leather on divers many times, and have no problem with that combination. If that strap were black, I'd say perfect combination.

Let's be honest-most divers never get anywhere near the water...
Which means that I keep a couple of watches "water ready" on rubber and bracelets, but others it doesn't matter as much.

JFK3531 14 March 06, 2011 07:37PM

With a Craftsman logo it doesn't truly seem as diver-ish, so I voted meh, it's ok. I love that strap though. Made from an old baseball glove no doubt?

I suppose I should mention that it's an "about 24mm" strap. It actually measures anywhere from 24.8mm to 25.3mm, depending on the specific spot you check. I am confused In reality, I suppose it was marketed as a 26mm strap. In any case..

"Mechanical watches are so brilliantly unnecessary. Any Swatch or Casio keeps better time, and high-end contemporary Swiss watches are priced like small cars. But mechanical watches partake of what my friend John Clute calls the Tamagotchi Gesture. They're pointless in a peculiarly needful way; they're comforting precisely because they require tending." - William Gibson
