Yeah, I'm slow.. Blushing but I generally get there in the end! Laughing

This one came to me via a customer who requested battery changes on a job-lot of a dozen watches or so. Alas, when I slipped a fresh cell in this one, the watch Failed To Proceed. Frowning He didn't think it worth the investment to repair it, and offered it to me as partial payment on the job. Sold!

The movement didn't appear totally dead, as the seconds hand would twitch and stutter in place. I had hopes of resuscitating it with the Horotec™ Turbo Tester but, alas, that proved to be a bust. Time to break out the tools and get serious! Laughing

Sure the operation was a success, and so I present..

..the Brigade Quartermasters Special Ops model 80210, aka the Tom Swift® Franken-Breitling. WooHoo!

But, you say, "What's all this hooraw about Breitling, Ricky? I am confused". Well..

Brigade Quartermasters Special Ops (Breitling Colt)
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..the watch does indeed have a strand or three of DNA. Smile

Even a signed crown:

Brigade Quartermasters Special Ops (Breitling Colt)

I think the watch might have been commissioned by and marketed through the Brigade Quartermasters retail operation. But that's entirely conjecture, and doesn't appear to sell watches with their logo on the dial currently, so perhaps I'm assuming too much.

Before I go any further, let's see a "before" photo:

Mind you, the only thing that's changed, outwardly, are the hands. While I like the originals just fine and, indeed, would have liked to have reused them, at 130/85/20 they proved incompatible with my chosen movement:

Stock photo

Stock photo

I selected SKU HAN-6576 units for the mains, with a HAN-6186 sweep seconds. Perhaps a bit "diver-ish" for what is, at heart, a Field Watch, but I think they work OK. And they were in stock, thus expedient. Wink

I freely admit that the PC33 is no where near as pretty as the original movement..

Brigade Quartermasters Special Ops (Breitling Colt)

..but, hey, you Can't Have It All. The PC33 is a stalwart, reliable & economical solution, and it ain't like the watch has a display back, after all. Laughing

Full stainless, 37.5mm X 40mm x 9.5mm thick, with 18mm lugs. Caseback and crown are both screwdowns, and the crystal is mineral glass. The bezel is 60-click unidirectional rotating, with a very nice action. Indeed, I am favorably impressed by the overall design and execution of this case, and have no doubt that it earns the 200M WR rating.

Side profile's..

Brigade Quartermasters Special Ops (Breitling Colt)
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..a bit off-the-beaten-path and, to me, quite pleasing.

The only significant snag in the build was that the dial-to-stem offset of the PC33 was ¼mm taller than the OEM movement. Oops! This results in the stem rubbing on the side of the case tube, and the action and "feel" of the push-pull operation is less than optimal. Luckily the crown, while no Vostok, is spring-loaded and has just enough "wobble" so that it screws down just fine. I dunno, it's not perfect, but it ain't bad, so I ain't gonna mess with it. Anyway, being a quartz, it ain't like you have to use the crown a lot. Wink Twice a year to reset for DST, plus resetting the calendar on those I am angry! pesky short months.

It came to me sans affixment, and I have no idea what the original might have been. Dunno about the green nylon. Part of me says that the color suits the military affectations of the watch perfectly, part of me says that it looks.. wrong. Crazy! Loco! Maybe I'll try a black or grey NATO.

One thing's for sure...

Should that happen I would immediately drop in the appropriate quartz "heart". Indeed, I have already identified the caliber 804.114 as being the exact one I'd need. One can never be too careful! Laughing

Luckily
{knocks on wood} there is no sign of "organ rejection" thus far. Whistle

Thanks for the kind words Bro. Jim!

Seriously, I may give that one a go later today. The (potential) problem with most ZULU straps is the thickness. This watch has very "compact" lugs, with the springbars being in close proximity to the case. An extremely thick strap would be a Fail. Frowning Even this one is a tight fit, and at .70mm it's quite thin.

Thank you! my friend.

Indeed, they are! If shipping to EU can be done for a few bucks in a envelope, it might be a super saver for me too (yes, I know, I love bracelets) but those kevlar style ones are also hard to resist....)

In that case they should remove their "International" from their name...
They price themselves out of the market with the difficult and expensive international orders. No wonder the Chinese keep on gaining markets... Something else. In India the silk workers are making a Sari (a kind of beautiful women's' dress) in silk in about 8 days on their century old type of wooden machines. But the Chinese are picking up on their trade making 3 sari's a day with their modern electric machines and they make it so, it looks like handmade...
So don't curse the Chinese, give them competition! I am angry!

I mean really. Expecting International Shipping for "a few bucks".. well, IMHO that's an unreasonable expectation. Wink

I think the new hands look better than original, certainly the red second hand, which...
...is nicely in tune with the red lettering, good job! Love black (ion plated/PVD) watches...Thumbs up! It is you can't do much with the short steel bracelets of Ricky_us, but they would look great with this watch too! Cool

James T. Kirk© 28 April 07, 2012 02:15PM

Re: ..black (ion plated/PVD)..steel bracelets of Ricky_us..would look great with this watch too! Cool
Ahh.. well, yeah, that'd look alright, I reckon. Hooded lugs, so straight endlinks would be a perfect fit.

But, in my experience, bracelets frequently seem a wee bit out-of-place on a Mil-Watch. At least a watch that has pretensions of the issued Mil-Watch type.

Not that I's a stickler in such matters! Laughing

AFAIK Breitling did a field watch for the Italian army in the 1980s.... (n/t)

Micha 27 April 07, 2012 02:09PM

Oh yeah, forgot to mention..
..mid-1980's jives perfectly with my Best Guess as to the date-of-manufacture of this watch.

Note that the original movement has a trim pot for adjusting the going-rate. That's a feature that hasn't been common on quartz movements for two decades and more, so I figure it is of ca. 1985 vintage.

Twisted logic, maybe, but That's My Story An' I'm Stickin' To It. Laughing

Ricky Lee 23 April 07, 2012 06:08PM

Otherwise, it'll be a good project for some Rainy-day WIS Research. Smile

FWIW these watches seem to be very, very rare. I have thus far been unable to google up a single image (other'n me own Laughing) and, indeed, have found not even a single text reference to them. I am confused

Ricky Lee 28 April 07, 2012 05:37PM

Here you go

Micha 31 April 08, 2012 02:47AM

What about soaking the green NATO in a bleach solution to lighten and wabi-ize it? If you have several or an old one, it might be a good experiment.I am confused

You know, since the watch itself has a bit of wabi, that could work!

Wow! Just curious, did the original movement approximate any current Swiss Made Watch or Movement
Movement offering? just wondering if there is a closer match to dial-to-stem, and the original hands.

Those original hands are killer, and have the perfect patina. Pity they were not compatible.

Just the same, good show! Better to have that one in service than not. Thumbs Up

Oh, sure! The ETA caliber 804.114 would be a plug-and-play replacement, I'm pretty certain, with the exception that one dial foot appears to not line up. The hands would've still been a no-go, however, as the ETA 804's also use 120/70 mains, though a 20 seconds.

I thought about going that route - keeping it "All Swiss" - but, frankly, that isn't important to me. And, strictly speaking, it would be just as much a Franken with the 804.114 as it is with the PC33. Plus, I got to say, I'm not impressed with the long-term reliability of the bottom-tier ETA quartz movements. I've encountered a bunch of dead ones.. far more than I have the SII PC-series!

And, yeah, the PC33 was convenient, being in-stock and ready to go. Laughing

Dave M

Yeah, I really wanted to re-use them, keep the watch bone-stock in appearance. To the extent that I searched at some length for a compatible movement using 130/85 hands! If I could have found one, I'd have gone for it. But, alas, it's a mythical beast as far as I can tell. Frowning
