I actually got two of these, identical save for one's on a folded-link SS Osyter bracelet that looks to be OEM, and t'other was on a cracked & rotten resin strap. I was a bit surprised by them, I admit, as I don't associate the marque with "quality", and so didn't expect much. But the more I looked, the better they looked, and I'm actually quite pleased with them. So here you go..

..the Armitron Pro-All-Sport! WooHOO!

So what's to like? Well just look at it! It is 37mm x 44mm, with a smooth 60-click unidirectional bezel - obviously inspired by the classic Submariner design, yet the crown at 4 keeps it from coming off as a slavish clone. And speaking of the crown - 'tis a rather large (5mm) SS screwdown affair with an impressive 6 turns of thread. Very solid and positive feeling, too! Many cheap watches with screwdown crown feel like they're liable to strip at any time, but not this one!

The case, while it is base metal, is quite well executed, and the caseback is a screwdown with more than average thread engagement. 'tis gasketed with a plus-sized round O-ring, and rated for 100M WR. That actually seems conservative to me - provided the gaskets were sound, I'd be surprised if it wasn't double that! It uses 18mm straps, so my choices are wide-open.. but yet I couldn't resist ye Standard Skunk NATO.

The movement is Japanese, a model Y143A by Shiojira Ltd. This is a new one on me, but looks quite well made for a commodity 0-jewel quartz. Both booted up fine upon installation of fresh 395 Energizers. Day and date are both quickset, and it sets smoothly and positively (much more positive than a PC21!).

Since I've got two, I'm thinkin' one might be mod fodder. Hey honeycutt! What's your recipe for baked dial and hands?!

A fresh look at an old watch.

The impetus for this was when I posted the watch in Monday's Rollcall and realized that I had only one decent photo of it. One! Oops! This despite the fact that I actually owned two identical units at one point (the second one now lives with Bro. Dan Meinhardt).

So I set out to remedy this sad situation! Here's what I came up with...

Yes, 'tis the Pro All-Sport, model 20-2373-5. It's been with me since the fall of 2009. Powered by a stalwart Shiojira Ltd. Y143A movement, I've grown to become rather fond of this unit.

Despite being plated base-metal (with SS back) it is well-built. With a screwdown caseback and crown, thick mineral crystal, and robust gaskets, I have no doubt the 100M WR rating is justified. And, indeed, this watch has been immersed on more than a few occasions.

The bezel is 60-click unidirectional rotating, with quite a smooth action. The action of the crown is excellent - smooth, positive, and with an impressive 6-turns of thread engagement. I've seen RMW with lesser crowns!

It could be considered small by current standards, at 37mm x 44mm X 9.5mm thick, with 18mm lugs. Meself, I prefer to think of it as "Classic Sized". Wink

It sure do wear Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr8! on the Tom Swift Combat NATO. Smile

"He looked down through the scratched, greenish glass that topped the counter. Watches there, each face to him a tiny and contained poem, a pocket museum, subject over time to the laws of entropy and of chance. These tiny mechanisms, their jeweled hearts beating. Wearing down, he knew, through the friction of metal on metal. He sold nothing unserviced, everything cleaned and lubricated. He took fresh stock to a sullen but highly skilled Pole in Oakland to be cleaned, oiled, and timed. And he did this, he knew, not to provide a better, more reliable product, but to ensure that each one might better survive in an essentially hostile universe. It would have been difficult to admit this to anyone, but it was true and he knew it. --William Gibson, narrative describing Fontaine, All Tomorrow's Parties

Decent watch Ricky. Even looks like the bezel is machined..
..even if it is plated.

Timemiser44June 15, 2012 08:03AM

Yes, the bezel is definitely machined..
..though it's also definitely plated base metal.

Still, the plating on this watch has held up very well over the years. Thumbs up!

Most SS Snob seem to overlook the fact that plated-base-metal is not plated-base-metal is not plated-base-metal. Whistle

There are are varying degrees of quality in both the metal substrate itself, and it's preparation, and in the materials and process of the electo-plating. Nearly infinite degrees, taken all together!

Cheers!

I had an Innovative Time watch back in the 80's that had the same case and dial (no lume... I am angry! )
I did quite like it at the time.

StefG129June 14, 2012 08:14PM

Ah! Funny you should mention that! Yes.. Image Attachments URL

As Jim said, they really copied Seiko and Rolex here.
Mostly, it looks like another copy of the Submariner, but with the Seiko 5 day/date scheme and crown positioning. Yeah, the dial looks like the Seiko 007, but that's kind of a Rolex copy too, if we're being honest.

May I ask what you like so much about that cheap quartz movement? You refer to it fondly, so there must be something about it that is better than the norm.

Now I'm not trying to put down one of your favorite watches, but just asking you to justify it a little further, because it seems like a cheap Chinese quartz Submariner clone.

wink

Smaug54June 14, 2012 06:10PM

Ah. But can you say with certainty that Seiko and/or Rolex didn't nick the design from Blancpain and Jaeger-LeCoultre? Gif Attachments
'cause both the Fifty Fathoms and the Deep Sea pre-date the Submariner, you know. Whistle

It's like Muddy Waters said.. and I can't be bothered to look up the exact quote, so I'll paraphrase. Anyway. Mr. McKinley Morganfield said "There ain't no such thing as an Original Blues Riff. Charlie Patton and Robert Johnson learned 'em from listenin' to field hands singin'. They learned 'em from their ancestors in Africa. Carry it all the way back, and you got a caveman, painting on the wall about this great new thing he invented - music".

It's pretty much the same thing with watches.

Sure.

* It's a product of the Seiko-Epson Group.

* It's tough as nails, yet economical.

* Accurate! A bad Y143A will keep 100X better time than a high-end mechanical.

* Very conservative of the battery. A good (read ) cell will go 2 years minimum, usually three or even approaching four.

* Did I mention it's a ?

That's OK. They serve my purposes, and I love them.

It is.

A Cheap Chinese Japanese Quartz Submariner Clone that has already delivered a decade-and-a-half of rock-solid service. And looks set to go another decade or two, no problem. All for an Original Purchase Price that, adjusted for inflation, is about equal to lunch at your upcoming TZ GTG. Innocent

Clear now?

Laughing Cheers!

Re:It's a product of the Seiko-Epson Group
That explains a great deal! Smile

James T. Kirk©36June 15, 2012 03:10AM

It has a lot of Seiko in the case and bezel, than some Rolex in the hands...
..but it certainly looks good. I am not so fond of that "base metal" as I had 2 watches, with that same stuff that just deteriorated, a long time ago a Citizen (yes, they offered cheap stuff with low quality cases too) and just a bit over a year a Meister Anker I bought well used...Not a pleasant site as it just seems to crumble off on the side and under the lugs and further... If you treat it well and don't wear it extensively, I'd see it will last very long time! Good review Ricky! Thumbs up!

sells watches with electro-plated base metal case to this day. As does .

Thing is, a plated base-metal case does not automatically equal "cheap stuff with low quality"! I am confused

IMHO! I admit 'tis somewhat of a judgement call. Smile

However, as you seem to realize instinctively..

The "care and feeding" accorded to a plated-base-metal watch has a major effect on longevity.

Cleaning it every once in a while will extend it's life ten-fold!

Re:Thing is, a plated base-metal case does not automatically equal "cheap stuff with low quality"!
That might be, but I'm talking 30 years back, when a smaller Citizen went bad after a few years (say 4) and the metal started to deteriorate: chrome plate fell off, leaving a brass colored metal underneath and even tiny pieces broke off. For many years I had a very bad opinion about Citizen after having a Seiko, from which after many, many years the bracelet broke and a few months later the digital movement seems to "exploded" (you know the awful black lcd spot in the middle). My esteem for cheaper Japanese watches was actually boosted again by my first Casio! Laughing

P.S. Still have that 'corps' of a Seiko digital here...
