A fresh look at an old watch.

Decent watch Ricky. Even looks like the bezel is machined.. ..even if it is plated. | Timemiser | 44 | June 15, 2012 08:03AM |
Yes, the bezel is definitely machined.. ..though it's also definitely plated base metal.
Still, the plating on this watch has held up very well over the years.
Most SS seem to overlook the fact that plated-base-metal is not plated-base-metal is not plated-base-metal.
There
are are varying degrees of quality in both the metal substrate itself,
and it's preparation, and in the materials and process of the
electo-plating. Nearly infinite degrees, taken all together!

I had an Innovative Time watch back in the 80's that had the same case and dial (no lume... ) I did quite like it at the time. | StefG | 129 | June 14, 2012 08:14PM |
Ah! Funny you should mention that! Yes..
..Innovative Time did indeed make a watch which was peas-in-a-pod with that Artmitron. I have one, actually. Or at least it's..
..based on an model MD951WY.Obviously..

..it has been tweaked a smidgen by me pal Dan Meinhardt. | Ricky Lee | 186 | June 15, 2012 05:43AM |
As Jim said, they really copied Seiko and Rolex here. Mostly, it looks like another copy of the Submariner, but with the Seiko
5 day/date scheme and crown positioning. Yeah, the dial looks like the
Seiko 007, but that's kind of a Rolex copy too, if we're being honest.

I ask what you like so much about that cheap quartz movement? You refer
to it fondly, so there must be something about it that is better than
the norm.
Now I'm not trying to put down one of your favorite
watches, but just asking you to justify it a little further, because it
seems like a cheap Chinese quartz Submariner clone.
| Smaug | 54 | June 14, 2012 06:10PM |
Ah. But can you say with certainty that Seiko and/or Rolex didn't nick the design from Blancpain and Jaeger-LeCoultre?
'cause both the Fifty Fathoms and the Deep Sea pre-date the Submariner, you know.
It's
like Muddy Waters said.. and I can't be bothered to look up the exact
quote, so I'll paraphrase. Anyway. Mr. McKinley Morganfield said "There
ain't no such thing as an Original Blues Riff. Charlie Patton and
Robert Johnson learned 'em from listenin' to field hands singin'. They learned 'em from their ancestors in Africa. Carry it all the way back, and you got a caveman, painting on the wall about this great new thing he invented - music".
It's pretty much the same thing with watches.

Sure.* It's a product of the Seiko-Epson Group.* It's tough as nails, yet economical.* Accurate! A bad Y143A will keep 100X better time than a high-end mechanical.* Very conservative of the battery. A good (read ) cell will go 2 years minimum, usually three or even approaching four.* Did I mention it's a ? Quote Smaug

Hey! Feel free!
Lots o' fellows here think my watches are shiite.
That's OK. They serve my purposes, and I love them.

Done. Right? Quote Smaug

It is.A Cheap Chinese Japanese Quartz Submariner Clone that has already
delivered a decade-and-a-half of rock-solid service. And looks set to
go another decade or two, no problem. All for an Original Purchase Price
that, adjusted for inflation, is about equal to lunch at your upcoming
TZ GTG. Clear now? | Ricky Lee | 52 | June 14, 2012 08:18PM |

It has a lot of Seiko in the case and bezel, than some Rolex in the hands... ..but it certainly looks good. I am not so fond of that "base metal" as I
had 2 watches, with that same stuff that just deteriorated, a long time
ago a Citizen (yes, they offered cheap stuff with low quality cases
too) and just a bit over a year a Meister Anker I bought well used...Not
a pleasant site as it just seems to crumble off on the side and under
the lugs and further... If you treat it well and don't wear it
extensively, I'd see it will last very long time! Good review Ricky! | James T. Kirk© | 51 | June 14, 2012 05:18PM |
Re: ..Citizen (yes, they offered cheap stuff with low quality cases too)..
sells watches with electro-plated base metal case to this day. As does .
Thing is, a plated base-metal case does not automatically equal "cheap stuff with low quality"!
IMHO! I admit 'tis somewhat of a judgement call.
However, as you seem to realize instinctively..

The "care and feeding" accorded to a plated-base-metal watch has a major effect on longevity.
Cleaning it every once in a while will extend it's life ten-fold!

Re:Thing is, a plated base-metal case does not automatically equal "cheap stuff with low quality"! That might be, but I'm talking 30 years back, when a smaller Citizen
went bad after a few years (say 4) and the metal started to deteriorate:
chrome plate fell off, leaving a brass colored metal underneath and
even tiny pieces broke off. For many years I had a very bad opinion
about Citizen after having a Seiko, from which after many, many years
the bracelet broke and a few months later the digital movement seems to
"exploded" (you know the awful black lcd spot in the middle). My esteem
for cheaper Japanese watches was actually boosted again by my first
Casio!
P.S. Still have that 'corps' of a Seiko digital here... | James T. Kirk© | 33 | June 16, 2012 07:23AM |

I don't find that surprising at all.

Heck, some of us even love their plastic models.

Even if you are an un-repentant plastic-hating reprobate, at least you're consistent.
