It's a happy day, a new watch arrived Apogäum F1 Grand Prix de Monaco Monte-Carlo Watch or Accessory Review

is one of those brands which has tempted me many times, yet I've never quite gotten around to taking the plunge. So imagine my surprise and delight when this showed up in the most recent donation to The Home For Wayward Wristwatches:

That's the OEM strap, and it's of somewhat unusual construction. The outer shell is thick (ballistic?) nylon backed with leather. Very supple, quite well made, very similar to a Banda "Polo Flamen". And, alas, ~ 1/2-inch (13mm) too short for me fat wrist. Frowning

But that's OK!

I've got plenty of spare straps! Smile

Full Stainless case measuring 40.5mm X 48mm X 13.5mm thick, with 20mm lugs. Screwdown caseback and crown, domed mineral crystal, with display back.

The watch is heavily influenced by the R0lex Daytona, of course. Smile So much so that I reckon it'd have to be considered a Daytona homage. Still, it's nearly 10% larger, and the planform is subtly different. The lugs in particular diverge quite substantially from the Daytona pattern. No where near as close as the Daytona homage, for instance.

No, it's not really a chronograph, but rather a Triple Pointer Date: the 9H subdial is Day, the 12H subdial is Month, and the 6H subdial a 24H Indicator. Now, normally I consider this a valid complication. But when it says CHRONOGRAPH AUTOMATIC on the dial? No. That's a faux chrono pure and simple. Thumbs down

That along with..

..the SWISS MODE ( Oops! Crazy! Loco! ) on the dial tempted me to make the subject line "Why German-Asian watches have a Bad Reputation". Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

Were I considering buying the watch, these would be deal-breakers.

Still. The darned thing wears great, runs like a champ (+3 sec/day checked over a 4-day period!), and is finished very well indeed.

Based on this one, I would definitely consider other models. Thumbs up!

Sláinte! Cheers!

Very stylish and looks decently put together as well, I think you got a winner there. Congrats. (n/t)

Däumn! I like the Monaco circuit map on the see-through caseback... Jpeg Attachments
Not being a chrono, but saying so is just Crazy! Loco! The numbers on the dial remind me of this one, the first watch I ever bought on the Internet (in 1999). It's a real quartz chronograph.

Yeah, the map is almost enough for me to forgive all. Laughing
The Charles-Hubert is a beauty! WIS Honeymoon

Looks like a mix between a Rolex Daytona and an Omega Speedmaster >>>
Looks nice, but I too have reservations about the faux-chrono.
Not the movement, but the fact that it says what it says.

Need_Omega 37 June 11, 2012 08:08PM

Actually similar to Chopard Mille Miglia (sort of like you said)... Wink Laughing Jpeg Attachments
As said before, non-chrono with chrono style gets a Thumbs down

Ah, I see now. Chopard bezel and Omega lugs Cheers! (n/t)

Apogäum was quite popular here back in the early 2000s. I'm not sure about their longevity. smile (n/t)

I'll report back in half-decade intervals. Wink

I hope so.
We'll just have to wait and see see how many reports I actually make.

You know....I really WANT to like this watch....but cannot....
The fake chrono is just a Thumbs down for me. I have two of em already and they see no wrist time at all ( AK Homme and Jaragar).......Love the brand name itself and like the overall style and finish of the watch though......now.....if they could only make the chrono functional.....

Re: ..now.....if they could only make the chrono functional...
They might.

They definitely do make simple time-only 3-hand models. No pretenses.

And based on the 4F of this one, I'm thinkin' they'd be a good buy.

By accident I've read about this Apogäum 'brand'... URL
,,the other day when I was trying to find more about my Constantin Weisz brand. It seems to sell on German TV shopping channels, but the name is just as fake as that of my Golden Beauty Wink. Sure is that an enormous amount of watches are made in China, and many even of brands you think are strictly European or American! Crazy! Loco! Also in ALL grades of quality, from the cheapest junk to the worthiest qualities with Miyota or Sea-Gul movements...

Also read this: [forums.watchuseek.com], especially about the factory where they make Akribos and Stührling watches...

Looks nice, but...
I don't really get the subdial at 9. It's the day of the week (01 to 07), but with ten marks in between -- who wants to measure 1/10th of a day? I am confused

Good point!

That subdial doesn't actually track in 1/10th increments, but 'snaps' to the whole numbers on the nose.

I reckon they printed it like that to further the Faux Chrono look.
Smile

Ricky Lee 29 June 11, 2012 07:06PM

You are right. Trying to keep the illusion it's a chrono... with 35 track marks. Sorry, Thumbs Down (n/t)

Wen 21 June 11, 2012 07:24PM

Fake chrono. Thumbs down But it looks pretty nice. Thumbs up! (n/t)

Robmks 24 June 11, 2012 06:04PM

+1 to that sentiment smile (n/t)

John N 23 June 11, 2012 07:09PM

Agreed. On both counts. Wink
Again, if it didn't say CHRONOGRAPH AUTOMATIC on the dial, I'd consider it a perfectly valid complication. Triple-date pointers have a long and illustrious history, after all.

The SWISS MODE thing? Well. I got a sure 'nough belly laugh out of that! And it's hard to fault a watch that makes you laugh.
